• iSTORYA.NET's CeSAFI Power Ranking

With the action of the first week of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) already in the books, the iSTORYA.NET Sports Team brings you its first edition of the Power Rankings – an unofficial system that takes a look at the different results from the past week and ranks the teams according to their performances.

Feel free to chime in on our rankings and as we normally espouse here on this platform – Mag iSTORYA Ta!

      Seniors Division

      #1 Southwestern University Cobras

The reigning champions start the season on top once more as they ended the week with a 2-0 (win-loss) record with a thrilling 76-70 win over the University of San Carlos Warriors and a dominant, 91-63 shellacking of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats.

The Cobras were surprisingly challenged by the Warriors which nearly snatched an upset win as they led, 67-61, in overtime before the titlists got their act together and won the game behind timely shots by Monbert Arong and the comebacking Mark Jayven Tallo. Tallo debuted for SWU with aplomb as he brought his flashy game back to Cebu after stints in Ateneo and La Salle and scored 27 points against USC. Arong took the scoring cudgels against CIT-U as he had 19 points.

#2 University of the Visayas Green Lancers

The former nine-time champions also share the top spot as they tote the same 2-0 record as their bitter rivals, SWU. They started their bid for redemption on a high note, routing the University of Cebu Webmasters, 81-62, before weathering the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, 91-80. Reinforcement Mike Harry has no doubt impressed, not only for his high-flying slam dunks but also for his scoring efficiency. The Cameroonian is averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds as of this writing. UV and SWU square off in their much-anticipated first meeting this season on Saturday, August 17, at 6 p.m.

#3 University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars

Year in and year out, the USJ-R Jaguars continue to place themselves in contender status. This year appears to be no different. The Jaguars carry a 1-1 record, winning over CIT-U, 79-66, before bowing to UV, 80-91. The future appears to be bright for this young team with the play of their promising rookies. Rendell Senining debuted in style with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists against the Wildcats while Fletcher Galvez top scored for the team in the loss to UV with 16 points.

#4 University of San Carlos Warriors

The Warriors raised eyebrows everywhere with their surprising strong performance against the Cobras. Admittedly, we did not think that USC was remotely capable of scaring the bejeezus out of SWU but they did behind the accurate perimeter sniping of Fil-Chinese Stephen Que, Ian Ortega and Miguel Plata, USC’s recruit from the University of Mindanao, who notched 23 points in his debut. Their two imports also impressed with their emphatic shot-blocking ability, notably Ahmed Salihou, who sent many of SWU shots to the bleachers.

      #5 University of Cebu Webmasters

Like many of the teams who are expected to struggle this season, the Webmasters are stuck trying to find their way with the absence of a clear-cut go-to guy. Their first game showed plenty of that as they were creamed by UV, 62-81. Supposed shooter Kim Gomez couldn’t hit the broad side of the barn while Jan Auditor spent more time on the bench than usual. The lone bright spot (and that’s stretching it) was rookie Noel Villanueva who shot his way to 15 points.

#6 Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats

Two games, two losses. That’s what losing your most viable offensive threat will do for you. CIT-U’s chances at respectability went along with Allan Dimco after the high-scoring forward was declared ineligible this season due to academic deficiencies. When that door closed though, a huge-ass window was opened in the form of Joshua dela Cerna, the talented rookie who exploded for 32 points and 11 rebounds in his first game against USJ-R. He followed that up with 18 more versus SWU.

#7 University of Southern Philippines Panthers

The Panthers did not see action this week but will be on the court this week.
