While doing research on the topic of love, hearts and heartbeat, I came across several stories and articles on how the heart is the most important organ of the human body. From a scientific point of view, the heart is arguably the most important as it is responsible for blood circulation and ensures that oxygen reaches every part of the body especially the brain. However, from a hopeless romantic or a mother’s point of view, the heart is unquestionably important yet on a totally different perspective.
When falling in love, the brain dictates the heart to beat faster, make pulse quicker, induce daydreaming and sometimes make you go crazy. This is because of the brain’s chemical reaction to this emotion. Studies show that people who are in love act as they if are under the influence of euphoria-inducing drugs. The good news however is that the brain does this naturally, thereby generating stimulants to the heart.
A mother, however, may have a totally different reaction. The brain releases chemicals that affect mostly the higher cortical regions, as well as areas that contain receptors for maternal love and mother and child bond. Thus, allowing us to witness the creation of one of the most beautiful mysteries in life – unconditional love.
The heart is involved just as much as the brain is. Love may not be created equal. But love can definitely inspire the heart, fuel compassion and motivate generosity. I’d like to believe that love, compassion and generosity are not just chemical reactions in the brain, but basic emotions that make us capable of reaching out to those who need help.
Love is a gift. And so is a heart…
