Today in Cebu History: April 10, 1942
After the fall of Bataan peninsula, the Japanese Forces advanced to occupy the major island of the country. The 35th Infantry Division of Japanese Imperial Army under the command of Major General Kyotake Kawaguchi landed at Barrio Bato, Pinamungahan, Cebu, along with three (3) warships and transport vessels.
The USAFFE forces who relied on their ill-equipped, ill-trained men valiantly engaged the advancing formidable enemy and stood their ground. In a few days the defenders of Cebu Island could not hold on to their position and shifted their strategy into a guerilla warfare leaving Cebu City open to the invading Imperial Japanese forces.
While USAFFE officials began to surrender, a guerilla unit was organized at the mountain areas of Cebu City known as Tabunan. Americans Harry Fenton, a broadcaster of a radio station and James Cushing, a mining engineer, later led the resistance under the Cebu Area Command.
This guerilla unit became the major breakthrough on the liberation of the whole Philippines when the Z Plan or the Koga papers fell into their hands on April 09 or 10, 1944. The Z Plan or the Koga papers outlined defensive plans against Allied attacks on Japan's South Pacific possessions and made provisions for engaging the American fleet in a decisive battle.
Tales of heroism and sacrifices of officers and men were foretold on the exploits of the Cebu Area Command. Their battle won and their reputation as the largest numbers of enemy kills than any other guerilla unit in the country remained well-recorded in our history.
As an encryption of the Bataan Memorial says:
LET FRIEND AND FOE RECOGNIZE THE MARTIAL SPIRIT THAT DEFEAT COULD NOT BREAK. TO THE MEMORY OF THESE BRAVE WARRIORS WHOSE BLOOD SOAKED EVERY ROCK OF THIS LAND SO THAT THIS NATION MIGHT ENDURE, THIS HUMBLE SHRINE IS CONSECRATED.
OUR MISSION IS TO REMEMBER
