We were under the impression that the powers that be didn't mind MU private servers. Is that true? ... or did people just lie to us?

...what makes the whole thing illegal? my interest is only to create server not for ILLEGAL use or anything else. in my point of view its another way to practise my programming career.

From what I was told, private servers is a breach of copyright in terms of using the characters developed by the creators of the game. In our own point of view, nothing is illegal because we can always try to give a valid reason why we are doing things but from an Intellectual Property point of view, we don't own the rights and we do not have permission to use it. Mobius Philippines just did a survey lastweek regarding what private servers are being used in the cafe around the Philippines. There were rumors that they'v shutdown a cafe in CDO because it was running a private server and filed a case against the owner. Webzen, the developer of the game is helping them daw.

the act of running an emulated server is actually not illegal, it is when people connect to the emulated servers using copyrighted game installations that makes this illegal.

so kung may emulated server ka with whatever game its okay to run it (its even okay to program a server emulation) BUT IF YOU LET OTHER PEOPLE CONNECT TO YOUR SERVER WHETHER FOR FREE OR FOR A FEE. That is the illegal part because people are modifying their game clients to connect to your server.

there are lots of emulators outhere, and they are not illegal. programmers made them, its a legitimate original program, and not illegal. now IF you use the emulator together with the copyrighted material such as a gameclient and others, it becomes illegal.
