what programs to chat over local network?

hey gang... I'm looking for a program for chatting over
a local area network (including wireless network) but
not over the internet

for use at home so we can communicate from the
computers around the house.

looking for something simple and free

if it can handle emoticons or audio/video chat as well
then great... but not so many bells and whistles

any suggestions and where to download them?

in my previous work, we were using some apps (i forgot the name of those two) that requires no server. you'll just install the application in your windows station, and you'll see those others who using the same app within your network, but that was crappy.
are you going to use a server for this application? if yes, then Jabber is the best thing for this.
