Default A64 X2 4000+ Brisbane temps -- Edited, FYI for Brisbane Users!!!!

Just bought the following to day at PC express.

    AMD X2 4000+ Brisbane
    MSI K9N Neo-F V3 (http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p...-F_V3&class=mb)

    Along with mY other parts:
    2GB DDR2 533Mhz
    40GB Segate HDD
    256MB Nvidia 7300GT DDR3
    431W Enermax PSU

I got the rig right now, and was wondering, why I'm getting 50 C orhigher on idle, according to the nTune utlity. Ntune utlity is also showig just one core. Also I just checked in the bios, the same.

A peculiar thing also is that the heatsink is hot to the touch, IIRC aren't Brisbanes very cool at stock?

ALSO i don't knoe of if this is signiicant, but I did not install the AMD CPU Driver.

    thanks for any help.

    EDIT:

Apparently, according to this thread here: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...103639&page=15

    Also read here: http://forums.amd.com/forum/messagev...&enterthread=y

AMD has reported the DTS on Brisbanes as being "broken"

NOTE: Intel and AMD recently published detailed, public information about the "DTS" (Digital Thermal Sensor), which provides much higher accuracy and more relevant temperature reading than the standard thermal diode sensors do.

This would mean that even using Core Temp you are not getting the accurate measurements on the temps of your processor's cores., specifcally on the Athlon x2 (Brisbanes only)

how are you viewing the processor temps via ntune? the only temp i see there is the gpu temp..which should normally be around 50 C for a 7300GT.i have almost the same specs as that, i'm using msi's dual core app to monitor temps and its usually around 40-45 when idle and 30-35 @ idle when cool & quiet is turned on

    Oh I see.

But I've entered the bios and it registers 50C I've tried "core temp" it also says 50C.

BTW, did you update your bios?

Also is it normal for the heatsink to be "hot to the touch?"

I'm not sure, but the task manager does see two cores. cpu-z also sees two cores... so i guess it safe. I might try updating the bios though, since: according to this:

    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?f...1&prod_no=1244

BIOS Type AMI BIOS File Size 462KB
    Version 2.4 Update Date 2007-11-23
Description - Update LAN ROM version.
    - Fixed BIOS report incorrect CPU temperature.

Sucessfully updated the bios. Temps seems to be dropping, however, I'm planning to put a fan on the heatsink below the processor. I've only just noticed that this board is the single chipset design not the more common north-south combo.

In addtion, I'm gonna get on of those fan adaptors sold by CD-R King, I'll try using a 120mm fan on the processor heatsink, maybe that might help cool it down. PLUS a dose of Artic Silver. If all else fails, I'll go for a new HSF.

Again, thanks for the help, Der FuHRER.

no probs bro, dako man sad ang heatsink sa combined NB/SB chip ana na mobo..i think payts ra ang side panel fan ana. also you might want to use cool & quiet..i had it enabled because more than 70% of the time i just leave my pc idle while downloading something. temps are down to 33 C for proc & 35 C for mobo while idle with it

north-south combo is only common to Intel while single/combined chipset design is common to AMD's.
