Cesafi teams scramble to complete rosters for 2007 season

ELIGIBILITY problems and disqualifications due to academic deficiencies has left top contending schools scampering for replacements to fill up the vacancies in the rosters for the 2007 season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament.

One of the teams mostly affected by lack of players is the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, who, according to head coach Raul Latonio, have been having problems of filling their lineup since the 2004 season.

    Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

Winners four-straight third place Cesafi honor, the Panthers is eyeing to beef up its line-up for the coming season.

In line with this, the team will be conducting tryouts from Monday to Saturday at 6-10 a.m. at the USPF Gym in Salinas Drive, Lahug this city.

“As of now, I only have seven players. Unluckily, we are lacking in ceiling and I fear we might field in an all-guard lineup in the Cesafi season,” Latonio said.

He said those who will qualify for the team will enjoy the benefits the school is giving.

“Aside from full scholarship, USP will provide quarters for the players, as well as a minimal amount of allowance,” Latonio added.

Also badly affected by lack of personnel is the come-backing Southwestern University Cobras. “Mostly because of academic deficiencies, I only have seven or eight eligible players left from last year’s lineup. That is why we are conducting tryouts to fill up vacant positions,” said SWU coach Dodie Miego. The Cobras hold its tryouts everyday from 6 to 9 a.m. at the Aznar Coliseum.

University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, on the other hand, is also conducting tryouts.

But unlike USP and SWU, Jaguars coach Edito Salacot needs only to fill up the guard positions, which he believed is their weakest position after the departure of Luther Luke Justiniani. “What my line-up lacks is a good point guard since Justiniani is no longer with the team. We need a back-up guard who could give Armand Ponce a rest,” said Salacot.

USJ-R conducts tryouts everyday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the University of San Jose-Recoletos Gym at its Basak Campus.

And as all of the teams above scramble to find players, perennial powerhouse University of the Visayas Green Lancers has grown even stronger this year.

UV coach Elmer Cabahug has plenty of talents to tap in their 2007 campaign including the sweet-shooting Harlou Villanil, 6-foot-6 center Edrian Lao, 6-foot-4 forward Michael Luga and power forward Ariel Mepaña. (RCM)
