@eax ... you have the two backwards.
Relative means relative to the domain name you are currently are. Say if I write the HTML for
http://www.bla.com, if I wanted to link to a an image in bla.com, I'd only have to link to it by ...

and the browser would know that that image is actually at
http://www.bla.com/bla/this_is_an_image.jpg. Again, relative by definition is how it relates to the current domain ... hence relative.
relative - "something having, or standing in, some relation to something else."
Absolute means the complete URL including the host.server.tld (
www.server.com). Going back to my example of writing HTML for
http://www.bla.com ... if I wanted to link to an image on a different domain such as
http://www.google.com ... I would have to use an absolute URL such as
