[color=navy]Because there are laws in this country that impose an age requirement for certain civil activities or processes to proceed.
For example if one wants to get married in a civil union, individuals must be at least 21 years old to get married without written parental consent.
So an official, legal ID (i.e. a passport) with a birth-date is very convenient to have around, isn't it?

I too from usc-main graduate. Our ID before has an birthdate. At that time, i was asking why put a birthdate on that ID.
But i realized that the main purpose of putting birthdate on the school ID is because there are some establishments like movies, restobars, etc. are verifying your age whether you are 18 & above. Example, if you are watching a movie nga R-18 sa Ayala cinema, then ang tan-aw sa mga guards sa sinehan nimo kay murag bata pa ka, then mao na rason by showing the ID to the guard that you are whether 18 & above para makasulod ka sa sinehan.
can we omit it? personaly?
