INTELLIGENCE operatives of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) 7 in Cebu arrested at past 2 p.m. yesterday a 42-year-old Japanese national who was accused of defrauding the Japanese Government of 3 million yen by posing as a victim of the tsunami that hit Japan’s northern region in 2011.
Officers of the BI Intelligence Unit, headed by lawyer Antonette Mangrobang, collared Takiro Oyama inside his rented apartment in Sitio Cambiohan, Barangay Casili, northern Consolacion town, 13 kilometers from Cebu City.
Casimiro Madarang III, BI 7 Alien Control Officer, said Oyama claimed that he had lost his house and properties during the tsunami and collected 1.5 million yen by using a friend’s identity and another 1.5 million yen for another friend.
He allegedly collected a total of 3 million yen, or P1.301 million at P0.43 per yen.
Oyama allegedly left Japan and engaged in a business in Cebu.
BI authorities, however, could not give details on the foreigner’s business here.
Madarang said Oyama, accompanied by his common-law wife, is detained at the BI stockade in Mandaue City.
His wife is with him, although she is not under arrest.
Madarang said Oyama was arrested through a mission order issued last July 24 and signed by BI Commissioner Siegfried Mison upon the request of the Japanese Embassy.
He said Oyama had been in and out of the country until recently he he had been hiding in Cebu, sensing that the Japanese government had cancelled his passport, making Oyama an undocumented alien.
Madarang said Oyama will be brought to Manila today for his deportation.
The Japanese Embassy, according to an ABS-CBN report, cancelled Oyama’s passport on April 2, 2012 because of his involvement in illegal activities.
