In the US (NYC to be exact) , they have a by-law to allow theatres to impose a fine and/or kick out someone when their cellphones goes off . Having a career started in live theatre designing sets , lights , and stage managing , it's really distracting when a cellphone rings during a performance and it's really disrespectful to the performers . It happened a lot of times ...

A cellphone ringing on a play in a black-box theatre is a worst thing can happen . One time I was designing a set for this play called PERFECT PIE . During a performance , a cellphone rang in the middle of an intense scene - where the main character tells her friend the details on how she was tied up and gang-raped - the mood of the scene instantly died .
