Sinulog judges noticed unoriginality among contingents

A “CLONING” of choreography and concepts among some dancing contingents was noticed by the judges in this year’s Sinulog grand parade.

So, they told those who will be joining next year’s competition to “be unique.”

Nestor Jardin, former president of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and a Sinulog judge for the past 20 years, said some of the contingents this year have the same storyline and steps.

“The choreography and concept of those who have won got copied. Unless a new winner emerges, yun na naman ang kokopyahin (that’s what will get copied next),” said Jardin, who chaired the board of judges in the free interpretation (FI) category.

Whether it’s in the FI or Sinulog-based category, all the contingents include a story about a miracle performed by the Sto. Niño: a harvest saved from drought or pests, a child revived from illness or injury, or a community rescued from witches and other supernatural terrors.

New ideas are harder to invent each year.
Even the tune is the same for every presenter every year.

Hopefully the next Sinulog will have a twist w/o sacrificing the real intention of the event which is to honor St. Nino.

i kinda agree. of course some of the basic dance steps and drum beating will rarely change especially in a Sinulog-based category. that's a given.

what i think the judges are looking for are some fresh ideas and creativity in presenting these dances

mao niy mga pinakacommon nga na-observe nako sa mga contigents nga nahimong Sinulog CLICHE for the past number of years:
1. finale will usually involve a movable ramp where the dancers can stand on and form the image of Santo Nino
2. doing the sine wave with their props (although ni arang arang karong year nga dili gyud ingon ana ka common)
3. ritual will always involve some sort of resurrections nga BORING og CORNY tanawon (IMO mas maayo pag walay ritual)
4. disregard for synchronized dancing (most of our LOCAL contigents suck at synchronization, diri sila usually malupigan sa mga out-of-town contigents)

honorable mention: i also remember the time nga na-uso og nicommon tong magtriangle-formation sila nga pinabarko-barko

common sense oi, the BASIC dance steps and the beat for a Sinulog-based dance is standard

what the judges and i'm personally looking for are some fresh ideas of presenting it. "presenting" means it involves everything from costumes to choreography to formations to props to themes to rituals, etc. etc.

heck even Basakanon for a while didn't really change their presentation much (with the whole pintado costumes and choreography) for the past two/three years until this year when they decided to do the eagles/birds

actually naa sad toy year nga daghang contigents nga pare-parehong pintado costumes ang gigamit.

morag ang dating sa akong na-obserbahan kay kung unsay nidaog karong yeara, usually irecycle lang ang CONCEPT sa ubang contigents by the next year. mao nay pagkasabot nako sa giingon ni Jardin nga CLONING or the lack of creativity from our contigents
