There's no doubt tablets are evolving, but the question is in which direction and Toshiba's new 13.3-inch Regza AT830 tablet is a product we don't really get. Admittedly, Toshiba has kitted it out with a 1600x900 display which is better than your average 10-inch tablet, but with 1080p models on the horizon, this feels like a product that has failed before it even hit retail.
The AT830 comes with a 1.4GHz Tegra 3 SoC, 1GB of RAM, 64GB of eMMC memory for storage and Android 4.0. You also get that 1600x900 13.3-inch IPS panel, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, support for the Japanese One-Seg TV standard, an 5Megapixel rear camera, a 2Megapixel front camera, a micro HDMI port, an SD card slot, a headset jack and a micro USB port.
The tablet weighs in at 1kg and measures 344x211x9.9mm (WxDxH), so it's not the most portable device around and most definitely not something you're going to want to hold at some distance for extended periods of time, unless you're planning on using it as an arm strengthening exercise tool. We managed to dig up some performance numbers courtesy of +D PC User Japan and with an overall score of 2,916 the AT830 doesn't really impress. That said, it's running a much higher resolution display than your average smartphone or tablet, so we'll cut it some slack, but even so, the memory and I/O scores don't really impress.
The battery is said to be good for up to 13h of continuous video playback, or 5h of TV viewing which has to be considered acceptable considering the large screen. However, the biggest fly in the ointment is Toshiba's price tag of 80,000 Yen (US$1000/S$1260) which is just an insane amount of money to pay for an overgrown Android tablet. We'd wait for some more interesting devices to arrive later this year, or failing all else, even get a 64GB iPad, as it has a higher resolution screen, weighs less and costs less, as crazy as it sounds.Source: Toshiba Japan
