Well, that didn't take long; the first 802.11ac Wi-Fi products have hit retail courtesy of Japanese Buffalo Technology, so if you fancy getting some Gigabit plus speeds over the airwaves, you now can. That said, the company has only announced a router and a Wi-Fi bridge so far, so if you were hoping to get a USB dongle for your notebook, then you'll have to wait a bit longer still. The two products are the AirStation WZR-D1800H router and the WLI-H4-D1300 wireless media bridge. Both products sport dual band 2.4GHz and 5GHz backwards compatibility, as well as 5GHz 802.11ac speeds of up to 1,300Mbps. Neither product looks anything like what Buffalo was showing at CES and CeBIT earlier this year and both products are in fact quite plain.
That said, when it comes to network equipment, it's not the looks that count, but rather the features and functionality and there are plenty of features on offer. The AirStation WZR-D1800H offers simultaneous dual band Wi-Fi with speeds of up to 450MBps in the 2.4GHz band and up to 1.3Gbps in the 5GHz band. It also has five Gigabit Ethernet ports of which one is for the WAN connection. There's also a USB port that accepts storage devices and printers. The AirStation WZR-D1800H also sports WPS and Buffalo's AOSS push button setup and it's said to come with an easy to use step by step setup wizard which would be new by Buffalo standards.
The WLI-H4-D1300 is fairly similar in terms of overall looks, but it only has four Gigabit Ethernet ports to which your devices would be connected. Basic functionality is the same as for the router, but the WLI-H4-D1300 has a simple push button for locking it to the 5GHz band. Both products appear to have a user adjustable stand which offers horizontal and vertical mode.
Sadly neither product has support for external antennas, but judging by the supported speeds, we're looking at 3x3 MIMO products here for both bands. Buffalo is asking for US$179.99 (S$229) for either product, which makes the wireless bridge a bit on the expensive side considering it offers far less functionality compared to the router. Both products are available in the US as of right now and we'd expect Buffalo to roll them out in other markets in the next few months.Source: Buffalo
