STARTING next week, the Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge will undergo major repair, which is expected to disrupt traffic flow on both approaches of the second Mandaue-Mactan brirdge.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 announced that it will repair the expansion joints of the bridge starting on May 2.


Expecting heavy traffic in both approaches of the bridge in the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu, DPWH 7 advised motorists to plan their trips to the two cities.
In a media advisory, DPWH 7 asked for the understanding and consideration of the public, especially the establishments, airline companies, couriers and workers of the Mactan Cebu International Airport and the Mactan Economic Zone who will be affected.
Details on the scope of work, project cost and duration of the repair were not available as of press time.
The P2.3-billion bridge was constructed by the Kajima-Sumimoto Joint Venture and was funded through a loan obtained by the Philippine Government from the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund of Japan.
The bridge is sustained by 80-high-tensile-strength cables, 15 pillars and two towers, and spans 185 meters, making it one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world.
The bridge was inaugurated and opened to the public on Aug. 3, 1999.
