Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile points out that respondent Chief Justice Renato Corona is the best person to testify before the impeachment court for the enlightenment of the case.
Enrile, who sits as the presiding officer of the impeachment court, added that Corona is the “primary witness” for the alleged irregularities of his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth, and his supposed partiality in favor of the former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
The prosecution team rested its case on Tuesday and said that they will no longer present evidence.
Lead prosecutor Iloilo Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. revealed that they have presented 25 witnesses and marked over 200 documents as evidence for articles 2, 3 and 7 of the impeachment complaint including Corona's bank records and SALN.
The senate president, however, stressed that the impeachment court can’t compel Corona to testify due to his constitutional right against self-incrimination.
Nasa kanya 'yun kung gusto niyang humarap,” he said.
But assuming Corona agreed to testify, Enrile noted that it would be beneficial for everyone.
“Makakabuti iyon sa kaso ng chief justice pati sa proseso pati sa bansa,” he said.
