Gunmen in south Philippines kidnap 14, set demand

MANILA, Philippines – Police say gunmen in the restive southern Philippines have kidnapped 14 people, most of them teachers, and are demanding freedom for jailed relatives.
Regional police chief Reynaldo Rafar said Saturday that the gunmen took the hostages after a graduation ceremony in Prosperidad town in the remote forests of southern Agusan del Sur province in the western part of Mindanao Island. Most of them are teachers, but there are some students in the group.
In the same town two years ago, a criminal gang that included former government militia took 47 villagers hostage after police tried to arrest them.
The hostages were freed several days later after intervention by Manobo tribal elders and some gang leaders were jailed.

AGUSAN DEL SUR (Updated 12:10 p.m.) -- Fourteen school officials and two students were taken hostage since late afternoon Friday by an armed group in Agusan del Sur province.

A television report said the hostage-taking incident took place at 4 p.m. in Sitio Gacub, Barangay La Purisima in Prosperidad town.

Police have identified the hostages as Division Superintendent Hipolito Lastimado; District Supervisor Narciso Oliveros; Principal Apolonio Alibangbang; Property Custodian Joel Sausa; teachers Allan Gallano, Manuel Mordeno, Filipina Quitoy, and Diosdado Cabantac; and volunteer teacher Mary Jean Bedrijo; and Arnold Quitoy, Pido Dolorito, Gerlie Monticalbo, Maricel Lagnazon, and Shen-shen Cabagtag.

The two students were not immediately identified.

The report added the armed men, led by Perez family, demanded for the release of Ondo Perez and three others who are detained at the Agusan del Sur Provincial Jail for hostage-taking charges last December 2009.

The hostage-takers led by Reyjoy Brital also demanded food.

Brital reportedly threatened to kill the hostages when told his demand would not be met.

The local authorities have formed a crisis management committee, headed by Prosperidad Mayor Albin Magdamit, for the release of the 16 hostages.
