MANILA, Philippines -- The lone winner of the P741-million lotto jackpot already claimed his prize Thursday afternoon, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) chair Margie Juico said.
The winner, a 60-year-old building estimator and a balikbayan from New York, was accompanied by at least three of his relatives when he went to the PCSO Office at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City around 3:30 p.m. to claim his check.
Juico said he requested that his prize be split into two checks.
Asked if the claimant wore a disguise to remain unrecognized, Juico said : “No. He actually looked very relaxed.” “He looked like he's just a simple man, mukhang mabait at madasalin (he looked nice and prayerful),” Juico said of her impression on the lotto winner. “But when he spoke, I noted that he has a twang, then he said he's a balikbayan (a visiting countryman from abroad) and that he and his family just came home for a reunion.”
The father of three arrived in the country along with his family and siblings last November 8.
“He said they were doing a sort of a sentimental journey. He said they went to Quezon and he even prayed at the Kamay ni Hesus Healing Church in Lucban. But he said he did not particularly invoke on winning the lotto,” Juico said.
It took a week before the winner learned that he won the biggest lotto jackpot ever.
“He said he just kept his ticket, unsigned. But when his family heard that the winner placed his bet in Olongapo, which was also one of the places they've been to, they prodded him to get it and check if it had won,” Juico narrated. “Nung una tinatamad pa daw sya na kunin pero nung nalaman niya na nanalo sya, sigaw daw sya nang sigaw at talagang pasalamat sya nang pasalamat sa Diyos (At first he felt sluggish to get the prize, but he said he was screaming and thanking God when he found out he won).”
“Namamasyal lang daw sila sa Subic and paalis na sila nung naisipan nya na tumaya. May sumingit pa nga daw na babae sa harap nya habang nasa pila sya. Baka hindi siya nanalo kung hindi sumingit yung babae (They were only on a tour in Subic and were about to leave when he thought of placing a bet. There was a girl who went ahead of him in line. He may not have won if the girl didn’t get ahead of him in line),” the PCSO chair said in jest. “I think it was only the second time that he placed his bet on lotto; the first time he did, he did not win. He said he placed a P100 bet on lucky pick numbers.”
The winner, who was scheduled to go back to New York in a week's time, mentioned that he would like to leave his fortune here in the Philippines.“Because he said he plans to retire here,” Juico said.
An 82-year-old woman earlier went to the PCSO claiming that she was the one who won the 6/55 Grand Lotto. But she said her winning ticket was stolen by her grandson who disappeared after the November 29 draw.
Accompanied by a female relative, the elderly woman was asking the PCSO to prevent her grandson from claiming the prize.
When asked if the building estimator and the woman's grandson were one and the same person, Juico said: “No, I don't think so.”
She added that the winner just smiled when she mentioned that somebody else was claiming his prize.
"I think he already heard about the old woman's story even before I mentioned it to him," she said.
