Contest Mechanics
Backgrounder
Since 2007, MBC has held a choral competition as part of its Paskong Pinoy festivities. The first edition featured a Children’s Choir Competition featuring school groups from Metro Manila In 2008, the contest expanded to include an Open Category for groups with members above the age of 14. And in 2009, we began drawing participants from various parts of the country in what has been premised as a nationwide choral contest.
Eligibility
· The competition shall be in two divisions – Children’s Choirs and the Open Category
· A choir may represent a school, parish, district, company, agency, or interest group;
· Participants in the children’s choir category must be 14 years old and below; photocopies of birth certificates should be submitted together with the registration form
· A choir should have a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 30 members;
· A chorister can only participate in one choir;
· Choral conductors may be professionals.
· No child conductor is allowed.
Competition format
Children’s Choir Division
· Participation in the children’s choir competition shall be by invitation.
· Choirs will be bracketed in groups of three for the daily contests on December 6-9 at the Star Theater;
· Each choir is required to sing three songs within 12 minutes -- the competition piece “Away in a Manger” to be sung a’capella; a novelty number; and one of three elective musical selections proposed by the choir from which the judges will select
· The four daily winners will face off in the grand finals on December 10;
· 3-time children’s division champion Hiyas ng Pilipinas has been elevated to the Hall of Fame and shall not be eligible to compete for a two-year period.
Open Category
· Prospective participants from Luzon will be auditioned at specific sites : Cauayan (Aug 24), Laoag (Aug 26), Baguio (Aug 2, Lucena (Sept 11), Naga (Sept 25), and either Oct 23 and 24 or Nov 6 and 7 at Star/Aliw;
· Regional contests will be conducted in Iloilo (Oct 7), Cebu (Oct 9), and Cagayan de Oro (Oct 15).
· Last year’s grand prize winner in the Open category (University of the Visayas) shall automatically be invited and does not need to join the regional eliminations.
· For the semifinals in Manila, the goal is to achieve participant choir ratio at: Mega-Manila (12), Luzon provincial (, Cebu regionals (2), Iloilo regionals (2), Mindanao regionals (3), plus the defending champion. Should any of the qualifying choirs in any region back out of the competition proper, the next highest scorer shall be offered a slot in the semis.
· For the semifinals, choirs will be bracketed in groups of seven, to compete in daily contests at the Star Theater on December 6-9.
· Each choir is required to sing three numbers within 12 minutes – the competition piece “Himig ng Pasko” to be sung a’capella; a novelty number; and one of three elective musical selections proposed by the choir from which the judges will select
· Two winners will be declared each evening.
· Daily winners compete in the grand finals on December 10.
Music Requirements
· Accompaniment, if any, is limited to one acoustic instrument – either piano, guitar, or other instrument specified by the score.
· Use of any electronic instrument or recorded accompaniment is not allowed.
· The choirs in the competition proper should submit their sheet music to MBC on or before November 26.
Running Order
The running order for each evening will be decided by drawing lots before each programme.
Jury
· The jury will be composed of people of recognised repute in the music and artistic world (including education and music criticism).
· In order to avoid possible repetitions, the jury may choose which piece will be performed from the roster of elective musical selections.
· The judges’ decisions will be final and irrevocable.
Criteria for Judging
· Musicality 40%
· Presentation 30%
· Audience Impact 30%
Penalties - Any choral group exceeding the time limit allotted for their performance will be penalized as follows:
· Less than one (1) minute over time allotted – 1% subtracted from total cumulative score of all judges
· One (1) to two (2) minutes over time allotted – 2% subtracted from total cumulative score of all judges
· More than two (2) minutes over time allotted – 3% subtracted from total cumulative score of all judges
Prizes at Stake
Each top winner in the regional contests to be held in Cebu, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Oro will receive a travel subsidy to help cover the group’s fare to Manila; this will be given to them upon booking their trip. 2nd and 3rd placers who qualify for the semis may compete in Manila but will have to cover their expenses
Each of the choirs that qualify for and compete in the semifinals are guaranteed P7,500 take home prize. Daily winners on each semifinal night will receive P15,000 each. For the Grand Finals, the winning choirs will receive trophies plus cash prizes as follows:
Children’s Division
Fourth place P 15,000 and trophy
Third place 30,000 and trophy
Second Place 50,000 and trophy
Champion 100,000 and trophy
Open Category
Fourth place P 20,000 and trophy
Third place 40,000 and trophy
Second place 75,000 and trophy
Champion 150,000 and trophy
Consolation prizes of P10,000 each will also be given to the four runners-up in the open category
