MANILA – Malacañang warned Filipinos yesterday against traveling to Thailand after violent clashes between troops and protesters in the capital.
“In view of Thailand’s declaration of a state of emergency in Bangkok and the surrounding provinces, it is urged that non-essential and non-urgent travels to Thailand be postponed until the current political tensions subside,” the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in an advisory.
Filipinos already in Thailand were urged “to take precautions and to avoid public places where rallies could take place.”
Philippine Ambassador to Thailand Antonio Rodriguez said no Filipino had been hurt in the anti-government protests that led to the cancellation of an Asian summit in the Thai resort town of Pattaya.
President Arroyo was among the many Asian leaders who had to be evacuated from the site by helicopter.
