Foreigners to pay for visiting beach

A proposal has been submitted to make foreigners pay for what they do to Lapu-Lapu City’s shores. Literally.
Pepe Berido, Cebu provincial fisherfolk officer of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), said he proposed that every foreigner who visits Lapu-Lapu’s beaches be required to pay a fee of $1 (P51.33).

“The rationale for this is that each person generates half a kilo of solid waste every day, even the visitors,” Berido said. “That is why we will be collecting $1 per visitor per visit once the ordinance is approved.”

The proposal was a fallout from last week’s incident in which dive platforms operated by Korean nationals were discovered to have allegedly been used without a permit.

The platforms were also used as staging areas for rearranging corals, which could be used as backdrops for underwater tourist pictures.

Berido proposed that of the fees collected, 50 percent would go to Lapu-Lapu’s coastal management. The money would be used to purchase patrol boats so that they would be able to implement fishery laws better.

The city government would get 25 percent of fees collected, while another 25 percent would go to the barangay government where the fee was collected, Berido said.

The BFAR officer admitted that not being able to protect marine resources was something that had happened in the past.

He said such failures would eventually cause a “domino effect” on tourism.

“Foreigners visit us for our beaches, to go diving. That’s why we have to take care of our marine resources,” Berido said.

The proposal also encouraged the regulation of the dive platforms, which Koreans call pajis.

I dont know if this is good... How will they collect the said fee? Will the local government assign a person per beach club to collect this? How can we be sure that the collection will go for good causes?

    mao dyud..

kung ilang purpose aning collection is to help maintain the beaches... gamit sila sa tax na ilang ginadawat from the beach clubs... although gamay lang percentage sa local govt ana.. for me, this is not a good idea...

    hahahaha

dive platforms what is the connections with each foreigner's generates half a kilo of solid waste every day

not even all foreigners are using this platforms or even knows about it.....

foreigners pay for what they do to Lapu-Lapu City’s shores and beaches wtf they have already payed entrance fees and hotel accomudation to use these beaches.

maybe what should they do is to regulate the use of such platforms or to collect fees to use such platforms and not for using lapu lapu' shores ,beaches what a crap hospitality we have

Not a good idea. Ipatong nalang ang 1$ tax sa mga services sa BAR's or something. Basin mabulsa lang na, alamz na. Specially kung walay Official Receipt, sus diretso jud na sa pocket sa kung kinsa man ang mo collect.
