Why would i shift to Vb.Net

Im using vb6.0, now everybody says switch to vb.net coz its the "IN" programming language today..

I just wanna ask People about this, Why would i? What can vb.net possibly do that vb6.0 cannot?

Any opinions?

Although I'm not using VB to write .NET application, and yet, our solutions can be achieved also without using .NET technologies which some part of it are blinded by Microsoft. Take note that writing VB & VB.NET are different hxxp://www.thescarms.com/vbasic/vb6vsvbnet.aspx so consider to put some effort and time to learn and get familiar with it... I used to write VB before to do some COM Object and deliver to some of our clients however, due to that they are using .NET via interop it makes the process terribly slow. So they shift back again to write purely outside .NET

Its worth to learn though, in fact my recent company drop me this 20 Video tutorial and self-paced training kit to get certified next year. Though its not required, yet they grant us time for this. its better to be prepare that's what he says... although we can deliver it in Python and C++ (so far) but time may come to meet some customers who strongly believed that .NET is the only solution.

if you are looking for job and want to raised more chances in your career to grow then study .NET. and take some time to at least read C/C++ codes. Some in depth explanation in .NET are written in C# (My room mate who use to work in VB is having a hard time interpreting/reading some documentations). This is really difficult to those who think about .NET now, every experience programmer/developer really take some time and seat down and think what's the best for them. Just don't add pressure on it... Enjoy it. cheers....

Currently i'm not writing applications using VB but before i used VB6 in my college thesis. When i got my first job i'm using C++(MFC) then later on i slowly moved on to .NET(C#) and C++/CLI to inter operate my MFC apps with the .NET technology. You can still write applications without using .NET but if you'll remain in the old technology you will be left behind, also productivity and development speed issues will come in.

its not being IN, there are some third party apps that VB.6 cant use, such as wsdl 3.0 its in the .net framework

I don't think that this cannot be achieved in plain VB especially if you are following W3C standards, and kinda weird whats on the 3.0 version. Haven't use this much anyway... I'm using some python features with similar results.

well im just explaining that there are some situations where VB6.0 will not be able to apply,

his question was "What can vb.net possibly do that vb6.0 cannot", and i would like to say using web references of third party apps. thats just my opinion, it can be done but the time it takes to make things compatible is consuming, lol I hope your an XP systems(XP Systems) developer cause i have questions haha

Anyway I was in the launching of the release pack of their so called "Apex kit" which happen invite the developers of each credit union, and a question was raised by a vb6.0 developer from orange county(cant remember but he was chinese), he asked if he could interface vb6 to the apex kit and what xp's lead dev said was no, what was required was studio 05 or 08 to use it.

So im just saying keep the VB6(dont abandon) skill but also just keep an open mind to learn whats out there since some companies are really specific what they need from a developer , just my 2 cents.

oh okay then its not VB6.0 cannot provide the solutions but its the XP systems that would not allow to do so... and yes I Agree, better to be prepared for a set of knowledge in other languages.

Yup, python has an excellent string manipulations, a found a complete package on this. cheers...

its not that XP systems made it not to be able to use with previous microsoft products, its just the technology wasnt "directly" compatible. but the middle ground was XML but in doing so wouldnt be time efficient,

There aren't much Python developer here in Asia...we really had this long time searching... while I'm busy crawling my neighborhood company to write codes for them during free time...extra $ sometimes
