Default intel has regained the performance crown... (new conroe benchmarks)..

    http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2713

Also keep in mind that we are over six months away from the actual launch of Conroe, performance can go up from where it is today. We also only looked at the 2.66GHz part and the Extreme Edition version of Conroe will most likely be clocked around 3.0GHz which will extend the performance advantage even further.

cant wait to see conroe pair up against amd's m2...

Well Intel's new procs and AMD's new procs are going to be release in H2.

My question guys, is AMD going to win back the performance crown?
    What do you think?

Intel is releasing what looks to be a very impressive set of products based on the Conroe core. There is no doubt that these will be better performing than anything that Intel has out today, and it will certainly be a lot cooler and more efficient than the current Pentium 4’s. That being said, just because this is a new architecture from Intel does not mean that it will automatically grab and keep the performance crown away from AMD and their products at that time.

There are far too many negatives with the FSB implementation of this architecture to really make it a top performer in all applications. While Intel has done a considerable amount of work on the cache structure to hide the performance penalties that using the GTL+ FSB entails, as we head to 64 bit computing even larger amounts of cache will be less effective with the increased data load that 64 bit entails. Now, if Intel had introduced Conroe and its family with an integrated memory controller as well as CSI (Common highspeed Serial Interconnect), then we would indeed feel more apt to say, “Yes, AMD is in trouble”. As it is, Intel will not introduce such a part for the desktop and mobile spaces until 2008. In 2007 Intel does expect to release a server class product that embraces those enhancements, and by that time AMD had better have a good answer to that product. If AMD’s Socket F products are shown to be as fast as the new Intel part, or slightly slower, then the gains they have made in the server space will soon evaporate.

AMD is not going to shrivel up and blow away with the launch of the Conroe series of products, and in fact AMD still has a good chance to grab more marketshare from Intel due to their forward looking architectural decisions. Add to that AMD’s continuing evolution of the Athlon core, as well as their jump to 65 nm late this fall, 2007 could still show some impressive marketshare gains for AMD. By 2008 though, AMD’s marketshare gains could very well plateau, because by then Intel will have CSI and integrated memory for their desktop and mobile parts. Once that happens, then AMD and Intel will be on a far more level playing field. Still, that is far away into the future, and neither Intel nor AMD are likely to sit back and relax. In the near future though, we can see that AMD will continue to gain marketshare over its rival, and with AMD’s latest focus on the mobile platform, their chances for gaining in that rapidly growing market could be phenomenal.

AMD is again well positioned to compete with Intel throughout the rest of 2006. While Conroe and its family of products will be impressive, they simply will not be the slam dunk that most expect. AMD may be slowed up in their marketshare gains, but the entire ecosystem built around the Athlon 64 architecture should continue to show its advantages over the current Intel products. Until Intel moves to the integrated memory controller and the CSI architecture, AMD will have two very large advantages over its counterpart.

As always, you have to analyze before concluding that Intel will solely grab the performance scene. Anyways, this are just marketing strategies, "Intel style".

I don't care how much power or heat is generated by a processor, as long as it is reasonable. AMD has been in the same thermal envelope for quite some time and I would hope things stay there and don't get any warmer. It seems that what AMD and Intel are really fighting for is the server market. That is where performance is most required, and profit margins are the highest. Later this year I expect AMD to steal the show with quad core Opterons.

For intel, take the Pentium-M architecture, remove the power contraints, add the the lessons learned from the Netburst, and you are going to get a very powerful processor.

Another, not so good news for Intel. AMD is no. 9 on Fortune's Americas Most Admired Companies of 2006, whcih would translate to more investors, more funding for their 65nm quad cores, which will eventually be another pain in the neck for Intel.

With respect to the owner of this thread, the word "regained" is on context, a past-tense, meaning, it has transpired. If Intel "regained the performance crown, on what aspect has it done so? Are these gains reflected on actual account, as to sales volume, consumer reviews, and other factual data, not to mention, technical data?
