How do we rate photography equipment and accessories? Suggestion for selling/trading.

I'll post it here since I am not selling anything but this should be on the buy and sell section whenever necessary.

It would be best for all, sellers/buyers/viewers to have a standard or guide on how we rate our photography equipment when we sell or trade it within istorya.net.

Condition Lenses

N Cameras & Photo Gear: Product is brand new and was never used. Includes full manufacturer's warranty.
Lenses: Product is brand new and was never used. Includes full manufacturer's warranty.

D Cameras & Photo Gear: Little or no signs of wear.
Lenses: Little or no signs of wear.

E+ Cameras & Photo Gear: May have slight wear but only visible under close inspection.
Lenses: Barrel may have slight wear but only visible under close inspection. Lens glass is flawless.*

E Cameras & Photo Gear: May show signs of light wear and/or usage. LCD may have very slight blemishes.
Lenses: Barrel may show signs of light wear and/or usage. Lens glass is very clean.*

E- Cameras & Photo Gear: Shows signs of moderate wear and/or usage. LCD may be scratched.
Lenses: Barrel shows signs of wear and/or moderate usage. Lens glass may have some dust / spots that should not affect picture quality.

V Cameras & Photo Gear: Appears well used and may include dings, scrapes/scratches, heavy brassing on body or LCD, but is in fully functional condition.
Lenses: Barrel appears well used and may include dings, scrapes/scratches, heavy brassing. Lens glass may have marks or haze that should not affect picture quality.


G Cameras & Photo Gear: Appears to have been used heavily, showing multiple dings, scrapes/scratches, cracks and heavy brassing but functions correctly.
Lenses: Barrel appears to have been used heavily, showing multiple dings, scrapes/scratches, heavy brassing. Lens glass may have fungus, excessive dust, and/or scratches that can affect picture quality.

F Cameras & Photo Gear: Item works with certain malfunctions. Read comments for exact details.

X Cameras & Photo Gear: For parts only Final Sale, Sold As-is

OB (open box) Fully backed by the manufacturer's warranty, refers to items that may have been displayed in our retail store, used occasionally for training, or returned without original packaging, accessories, and manuals. Please inspect and test the product immediately upon receipt.

For all other grades - Instruction books, caps, batteries, cases, hoods and straps are sold separately, except when specified.

All digital cameras are packed with Battery and charger except when stated otherwise.

*Used Lens Glass Disclaimer - Lenses, even when brand new from the factory, may have a slight amount of dust visible between the lens elements. This is an unavoidable result of the manufacturing process and will not affect image quality or resolution.

I believed the letters or initials used to described the current condition of the item can easily be remembered for they stand as described. One can simply identify the item as E+ for example, to shorten the post and simply refer a link to what an E+ rating is.
Here's how I understand each initials:

N for new (sealed box from manufacturer)
D for demo ( New items only used for demo or as demonstration unit )
E+ for excellent, requires a very keen eye to spot some minor signs of wear but does not affect quality or performance.
E again for excellent but slightly below E+
E- still for excellent but still does not affect performance.
V for Very good but well used and can't be considered on the level of any of the conditions above. Quality of performance still not affected at this level.
G for Good and functional but quality of output can be affected at this level.
F for Fair or with Failure or malfunction on certain parts.
X maybe for eXpired from completely functional as a whole but have parts that can still be use.
OB for Open Box. For used items, it is understood it is already out of the box. For New items but the Box is already Open, this will describe it unless it belongs to other categories for better status.


With this guide, it would be easy for sellers to place the item at certain category and for buyers or viewers to be aware of the real conditions. This will save us time and money. Of course not everyone can perfectly place an item to certain rated conditions since not every one have a keen eye for everything but the described description for every condition make it easy for anyone to rate an item and having a guide like this one is already a good start.
