Asus kicked off with Windows tablets, but it saved the best for last - two new Zenfones, one of which is a $200 LG G3 alternative, while the other is a slender camera hybrid. The Zenfone 2 and Zenfone Zoom are based on the same hardware platform and a more zen Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The Asus Zenfone 2 - just 2, no 4/5/6 this time around - is the follow-up to the popular line. With narrow bezels this one is more compact than the Zenfone 6, but Zenfone 4 owners will be disappointed.
If they can bear the 5.5" phablet though, they may be the first among their friends to have 4GB of RAM in their pocket. The Asus Zenfone 2 uses a quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor (Z3560 in some regions) and runs Android 5.0 Lollipop with the latest ZenUI from Asus. Note that in some regions the RAM is cut in half, 2GB (and that's the $200 version, of course).
The Asus Zenfone Zoom bumps the thickness just a touch - from 10.9mm for the Zenfone 2 to 12mm. It packs on extra weight because it's carrying a 3x optical zoom lens with stabilization. It's a 13MP/1080p camera, same as on the non-Zoom, but the lens adds a lot of versatility to the camera.





The Zenfone 2 has a 13MP with a ƒ/2.0 aperture with a dual-tone flash, as well as a 5MP front-facing camera. It comes with an option for 2GB and, in a first for an Android device, 4GB of RAM, and Dual Channel for up to twice the data transfer efficiency over the last Zenfone. It has a 3000mAh battery, that ASUS says charges from 0-60% in 39 minutes.
ASUS is also launching updates to ZenUI. The emphasis with these updates are increased personalization and security. You can choose the theme, fonts, and icons for your Zenfone. It features a kids mode with increased parental controls. SnapView helps secure apps, photos, and files, separating personal and business information.
The ASUS Zenfone 2 will be available in March 2015 starting at $199.



Asus Zenfone Zoom

The ASUS Zenfone Zoom is another new smartphone from ASUS that focuses on the camera. It hearkens of the Nokia Lumia 1020, with a camera hump on the back that allows it to have 3x optical zoom. That’s paired with a 10-element lens, 13-megapixel sensor and optical image stabilization for incredible detail and low-light performance. Laser autofocus is included and the software includes a powerful macro mode as well as full manual control over camera settings.
The Zenfone Zoom is also equipped with a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 5-megapixel front-facing camera Android 5.0 Lollipop with ZenUI.
ASUS has priced the Zenfone 2 at $199 off-contract and it will be available in March with five different color options. The Zenfone Zoom is priced at $399 off-contract and will be available in Q2 2015.

The $200 version of the phone will be based on the Z3560 (1.8GHz) and will have “only” 2GB of RAM. Here’s an early comparison of performance in AnTuTu 5.5.

The 2.3GHz/4GB version of the Asus Zenfone 2 scores 43,809, while the 1.8GHz/2GB one got 40,926. Surprisingly the difference in CPU performance isn’t very significant despite the 500MHz gap in clock speed. RAM scores go in favor of the 4GB model, but the difference is hardly double.

Still, that’s just one benchmark and benchmarks aren’t great at gauging the multitasking experience anyway.
