Lightbulb On your old PC's - it still can serve you well

    peeps,

na inganyo man gyud ko aning idea for a PC-based NAS. if you have those old and still functioning rigs that are put aside or inside your closet, you can still use it as a PC-based NAS... once set-up, they can be headless (monitor-less), keyboard less & mouse less. electricity consumption wise, they would only consume a little since, they are in most of the time @ idle state. you can use them as a back-up for your important files for redundancy... pwede ra man i-ON ang NAS once need na mag back-up...

akoa, gamit ra ko'g FreeNAS. ang OS kay gibutang nako sa USB drive... ayaw i-butang ug HDD ang FreeNAS OS kay dili na magamit ang HDD if naa sya did2.. dedicated man ang repository for OS only.. naa daghan NAS OS. either 32 bit or 64 bit version.. to name some others... NAS4Free, Openfiler, Open Media Vault... naa pa uban NAS OS...

then maka software RAID... RAID0, RAID1, RAIDZ (either Z1 or Z2)... if gamit ug HW raid, pwede pa ang uban RAID configuration... the PC-based NAS can give life to your abandoned rig... nag share naman ko's pics sa akoang FreeNAS diri... allow me it here again...

my file server is PD 925... allow me to share the full spec...

    Cpu: Intel Pentium D 925
Cpu cooling system: Deep Cool Alpha 30 (95W compatible)
    Mobo: Asus P5KPL-AM
    Ram: Kingston ValueRam 4GB DDR2 800 MHz (2 x 2GB)
    Gpu: Asus EAH5450 512 VRAM DDR3
    Psu: Antec EarthWatts EA-380D
HDDs: 2 x 2TB Toshiba (Hitachi) DT01ACA200 and a Samsung 40 GB SATA... i'm planning to add another pair for RaidZ2
    Chassis: SAMA
OS: FreeNAS release 8.3.0 (64 bit)
NIC: Upgraded to Intel EXPI9301CT from the mobo's on-board NIC so as to utilize my Gigabit home Ethernet bandwidth speed... coming pa'ng Intel Gigabit NIC... basin abot to ugma or sa monday, next week na nko madawat

allow me to share the pic... its on the right side of the bunch...

then here's the info on FreeNAS... bag-o pa nko gi "On" ang NAS aning pag capture nko sa images as OS info nya... wala pa nko ma balik ang RAID0 configuration pag kuha nko sa pics pero, akong i-set up balik sa RAID0 after this post...

karon na day, nalingaw ko'g pangita'g used or bnew CPUs & mobos for AMD & Intel online... naa man mga old AMD Athlon 64 X2 & Sempron na 35W & 45W TDP lang... so, gamay ra ni sila kaon kuryente kay bugnaw man... then naa pud Celeron E420, E430 & E440 na 35W lang... unya, naa ma gyud Atom N230 na 4W lang ug uban previous released atom pud na tag 10W lang like the D410... daghan kaayo ma pili-an na mga old HW for a NAS box...

    ^ nice HW bro, grats!

i've been using ZFS pud on my system, actually, ok ra man sya. ako ra man pud isa diri sa balay ang mag access sa NAS... akoang nakita sa physical ram utilizatioin nya once mag transfer ko'g files kay mahurot ang 4GB... hehehe... then ang speed kay katong ingon nko na mag range lang ug 9 ~ 12 GB/sec lang... pero, 9.6 GB/sec lang ang permi mo patak... 100 Mbps link pa man pud. hope mo pas2x ni once ma full 1000 Mbps na... mag transfer lang pud ko'g files during back-up or after maka download man pud... a "Nice to have" thing ang utilization for a 1000 Mbps link... egat2x si manoi diri... hehehe... a 100 Mpbs link will do ra gyud...

mura'g ma slide further pa ang purchase for another pair of 2TB HDDs... sige ko'g huna2x diri na gamay pa kaayo ang total file size nako. 600+ GB ra then naka back-up pa gyud sya sa external HDD. if i'll purchase the 2 x 2TBs now, dili maayo... safe ra ang files nko ron sa configuration & back-up. mag labay lang ko'g money if mo go ko's purchase. sige ra ba'g pangamay ang 360buy... paets... hehehehe... mao ning akoang gi butang sa utok nko ron para dili maka kick-in ang urge nako to purchase the pair... "Additional Redudandancy for me now = Waste of Funds"... so, pugong lang sa ko ron sa akaong "Nice to have"... hehehe...

post unya ko gabi-i sa performance sa NAS on 4GB system ram on ZFS... akoang pa-access-son sa NAS ang 5 other PCs... 3 wired (2 desktops on 1000 Mbps link & 1 desktop on 100 Mbps link) and 2 PCs on wireless connection (1 desktop & 1 notebook)...
