I am involved in a program right now where filipino teenagers learn chinese for the first time. it's a ten-month program with about 2-3 hours of chinese lessons daily. the first four months were spent on learning the tones, pinyin, and some vocabulary but i guess the approach was still traditional and i found the learning pace slow. we are now into our 5th month and we're making some changes, adopting an approach that would hasten the learning pace.

So basically now we are targetting specific skill output. like for this month, we want the students to tell people about themselves (name, age, birthday, province, family, hobbies, interests, dreams in life, etc.). So to achieve this, the teacher aims for a skill output in every class. and, to make it fun (coz learning the fun way is learning painlessly), we will hold a MANDARIN IDOL contest. students will "audition" by introducing themselves (in front of a video camera) with as many sentences that they know. they also get a grade for this (their mid-term grade). the top 5 will appear for the "finals" where they will be asked with follow-up questions by judges (native speakers).

so, i'm hoping that this will work. i myself am participating in this. will see what happens and will post outcome here.

    P.S.
    today the target structure was:
Q: ni zui xihuan de _________ shi shenme/shei? (what/who is your favorite ________?
A: wo zui xihuan de _________ shi ________ yinwei ta __________. (my favorite _____ is ____ because....)

    Ex.
wo zui xihuan de shuiguo shi li, yinwei ta hen duo zhi. (my favorite fruit is pear because it is very juicy.)

today i'm going to set up an area where there's a desk with all kinds of school/office items and the question "zhe shi shenme?". students will say the chinese term for each item and put it into a basket. if they cannot name the item, it stays on the desk.

pretty much like learning in kindergarten
