BAMAKO, Mali -- Despite a punishing bombardment by French warplanes, al-Qaida-linked insurgents grabbed more territory in Mali on Monday, seizing a strategic military camp that brought them far closer to the government's seat of power.

Declaring France had "opened the gates of hell" with its assault, the rebels threatened retribution.

"France ... has fallen into a trap much more dangerous than Iraq, Afghanistan or Somalia," said Omar Ould Hamaha, a leader of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, one of the rebel groups controlling the north, speaking on radio Europe 1.

Africa has enough existing problems without Islamofascists grabbing power. Better to wipe them out now than give them time to consolidate and spread. At least there is recognition that these people aren't to be negotiated with. It is an ideological war and only a clear victory will suffice.

Thanks to the West intervention in Libya. They funded the Islamist with cash and arms and now it expanded to Mali with the weapons from Libya.

The West supported "the opposition" in Libya and Syria which is a very broad term, a collective comprising many different groups. Islamists take advantage of turmoil... it's the nature of the beast. As far as arms are concerned... well there's never been a shortage of weapons on that continent.
