They did not embody the church, but merely a part of the church, and more specifically the corrupt and undesirable part of the church. Sad to say being a part of the church is voluntary and there is no effective way to screen the characters of those who wish to enter and serve.It is even impossible for we could not read minds and would ultimately know who they are and what they are.It's a human thing.
