Jalosjos release: Family’s plea, not political payback—gov’t
Thursday, 09 22, 2005
Malacañang yesterday denied allegations that the impending release of former Zamboanga del Norte Rep. Romeo Jalosjos from the National Bilibid Prisons (NBP) was a political payback for his family who supported President Arroyo, with the convicted rapist's siblings in the House of Representatives voting to junk the impeachment complaints against the President.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, during a chance interview, said if Jalosjos would be released it was due to the recommendations of NBP's Board of Pardons and Parole.
Asked if it was related to the killed impeachment, Ermita stressed that “There's a procedure that it has to be certified and approved by Malacañang but there has to be a recommendation from the Board of Pardons if ever his (life) sentence would be cut short or he would be given pardon. We have to follow their procedures.”
Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez also yesterday seesawed on his reported leaning toward granting a request for the release of Jalosjos on health reasons.
