CLUB 8
The People’s Record
CD/Vinyl album, LAB130
It happened, it just happened like it does sometimes. Sure, you can dig, ask questions and analyze; “How did this happen?”, study the guest list, give the producer’s name a recognising nod or take a long look what’s in the studio Konst & Ramar’s underground premises. And what have happened in the Club’s life? What have they been listening to since 2007’s “The boy who couldn’t stop dreaming?” What countries have they visited? Who did they meet on their way and whilst there?
You can probably find some reasons for the Club’s peaking creativity and parts of the explanation there. But mostly and foremost- it just happened. A rare stroke of luck with different kinds of people brought together during a few days in the coldest days of 2009/2010 and just went with the magical process that became “The People’s Record”.
/Aaron Porter, February 1 – 2010
Club 8 is vocalist Karolina Komstedt and songwriter Johan Angergård (also in The Legends and Acid House Kings). The band has released six albums, excluding this, all produced by Johan Angergård and the last three were recorded by the band themselves in Summersound Studios. “The People’s Record” is the first one with an extern producer.
In the spring of 2009 Club 8 started working on songs for their seventh album. The band had travelled to Brazil for inspiration and bought records made in the 70's in Western Africa and a new, more rhythmical side of the band started to show in the new songs. The band was also becoming curious about working with a producer. After having read an interview with Jari Haapalainen (Camera Obscura, The Concretes, Ed Harcourt, etc) they decided to ask him. He loved what he heard and the rest is… “The People’s Record”.
“The boy who couldn’t stop dreaming” was released year 2007 and became a turning point for the band. Before their career was very introvert; they never played live, rarely gave interviews and almost didn’t care to release their music in their home country.
- “We’re never going to be a band that do two hundred interviews a year and tour two months in a row. But I can see now that it can be of great use sometimes to meet the people who listen to your music.” (Karolina)
In Sweden the band got a minor hit with the occasionally misinterpreted song ”Jesus, walk with me”. It entered the sales chart at number 13, was on National Radio, SR stations (equivalent to BBC in the UK) P4’s and P3’s most played list, was played on fast food restaurants around Sweden and was featured in commercial for a travel agency in almost two years.
-“I find it quite beautiful that a song about death can be so beloved by the people.” (Johan)
Club 8’s first six albums origin from Swedish melancholy, classic English guitar pop and Brazilian sounds. On “The People’s Record” things have changed – they’re now making music that has no boundaries whatsoever. The lyrics often take place in foggy dreamlike scenarios with occasional feisty irony about the meaninglessness of life, and yet (or perhaps because of it?) the album feels undenaibly... well, do we dare say it? Life-affirming.
