I don't believe that Laziness of a Filipino is the reason why Philippines doesn't improve much compared to other fast growing countries. If we compare the efforts of Filipino, in terms of working, compared to American or other nationalities they are way behind from us. In fact a Filipino usually doesn't think twice of working overtimes as long as they are paid. Those that belong to a well industrialized country would perceive about the weekend and getting time off even if its the first day of the week, while I Filipino looks forward for an overtime so he can earn more.


I believe when the article said that "Laziness breeds opportunity". This Laziness of other people gives us, the hard working, a job.

It's weird how the majority of people who think Filipinos are lazy are Filipinos themselves. When non-Filipinos think of Filipinos ... lazy isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Seriously.

Are these qualities qualified for laziness?

Overseas, filipinos are the most hardworking... Then nganu man masulti na tamad ta diba...

We are not naturally lazy but I think the system and labor laws here have created an environment that nurtures laziness.

That's why you can't generalize on the basis of OFWs because they are working in a completely different system. For example, in the U.S. an employer can fire their employees anytime so their employees don't think twice about doing overtime or showing their employers that they really deserve their job. Here, even the OP admits that people only work overtime if they get paid, and by that, getting paid up to 2x more than regular hours.

Aside from that we have a bad tendency to demand things that maybe we don't deserve without thinking things through. For example, most workers think increasing minimum wage is good, when in fact it is one of the most harmful things to business and therefore their own welfare. Minimum wage also encourages laziness because people will think why work hard when you can just do the minimum and earn the same high minimum wage as everyone else?

So I think we aren't naturally lazy but our government system and labor laws encourage laziness and doesn't reward hard work. Our laws make it very hard to fire somebody so incompetent people are encouraged whereas hardworking people aren't incentivized properly. Minimum wage causes distortion in renumeration so talented people go overseas rather than be subjected to minimum wage equal in earnings to what an uneducated person earns.

Change the system and the people will change too.
