Iran donates $50M to Hamas-led govt

TEHRAN - Iran is giving $50 million to the cash-strapped Palestinian Authority to fill gaps left by Western aid cuts, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Sunday.

The donation will help make up the shortfall left by the aid cut-off by the United States and the European Union and Israel's freezing of the transfer of about $50 million a month in tax and customs receipts to the Hamas-controlled Palestinian government.

"I am honored to announce that Iran has donated $50 million to help the Palestinian nation," Mottaki said in a televised speech to a conference in Tehran on the Palestinian issue.

Mottaki said the gift was Iran's duty as a friend of the Palestinians, but did not say how or when it would reach them.

A Hamas official, who asked not to be identified, later told Reuters in Dubai that Iran was donating $100 million to the Palestinian Authority. There was no immediate confirmation from Iranian officials.

Iran has been at odds with the United States since its 1979 Islamic revolution, and has refused to recognize Israel.

Washington and the European Union froze aid to the Hamas-led government because the Islamist group did not comply with their demand that it recognize Israel, renounce violence and abide by interim peace agreements.

The Palestinian economy has been crippled during years of fighting with Israel, and Palestinians are dependent on foreign aid totaling more than $1 billion a year.

Mottaki called on Muslims around the world to support the Palestinians. "The Islamic world should help the new Palestinian government to overcome its current problems," he said.

Hamas, which took office on March 29, faces a financial crisis and a struggle to revive an economy suffering from widespread poverty and corruption and high unemployment.

It has called on Arab states to make up the shortfall but has not even been able to find a bank willing to handle its finances.

The 22-member Arab League promised last month to maintain aid to the Palestinian Authority at around $55 million a month.

Hamas, which carried out many suicide bombings in Israel during the uprising against Israeli occupation but has largely observed a truce for the past year, has repeatedly said it has no intention of recognizing the Jewish state.

But it has offered a long-term truce if Israel fully withdraws from land captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

Israel has dismissed such an offer as a non-starter and vowed not to negotiate with the group.

US and Israeli officials are concerned that Tehran, which also refuses to recognize Israel, will gain influence over the Hamas-led government and make it harder to reach a Middle East peace settlement. Reuters

I admire Islamic States helping each other. I mean they have the balls to stand up against a bully like United States. Its a tough decision. People are being conditioned by the US that Iran and Palestine are terrorist. Well, it may be true but thats US propaganda.

Anyway, the developments now are worthy of watching. Iran is now a nuclear power and I think George Bush should not mess around with Iran like what they did to the Iraqis. Thsi time America will fall.

    See?

LOZY iran nuclear power? STILL a long way pal unlike pakistan which has modern secular government in its controlled cities and territories it has produces the likes of Abdul Qadeer Khan in universities...where professors teach unlike IRAN were Clerics and mullahs roam and teach the schools and all govenment authority emanates from its supreme ayatollah even the it's president is under his divine office since its 79 islamic revolution many of its acadamic and artist people left the country simply because reading a wrong book or a wearing a skirt can get you killed... maybe with outside help but unlikely with its world diplomatic status so isolated.. IF IRAN WANTS a nuclear bomb it had to adopt with modern timeS ... George Bush should learn NORTH KOREA AND IRAN are to be rekon with not iraq in the first place... afghan in tactics is correct with a small size regular troops backed mostly by special forces with no need for massive occupation achive a goal without any significant casualties physicaly and psychologicaly..

AS for hamas well they just follow the foot steps of PLO before a US and european list terrorist now a legitimate government party recognize bY the US and EU.. see?? i cant understand the definition of TERRORIST??

    Perteng walahon jud.

After all, Cebu is no place for the leftists and communists. Let the economy (sans "Imperial Manila") do the action to shut their leftists' foul mouth up.

Two things I learned from mosimos:

    1. He loves Philippines except Cebu
    2. He is and SOB Communist
