After losing PBA title series, Air21 looks to bright future

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us MANILA, Philippines – Management of the Air21 basketball team has decided to keep its core of players as the franchise looks to build on the success of its final-round run in the recent Smart-Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference.

The Express lost 4-3 to Barangay Ginebra in a tightly fought title series, Air21’s best finish since its league debut in 2002.

“Keep the core, that’s what management told me," Air21 coach Bo Perasol said after his team lost to Ginebra 97-84 in the best-of-seven decider Wednesday.

The Express have five players whose contracts have expired—Homer Se, Niño Canaleta, Gabby Espinas, Ervin Sotto and Egay Billones. But management has said all five are likely to be rehired.

To further shore its lineup, Air21 will have the sixth and eighth picks in the PBA Rookie Draft on August 31 at the Market! Market! in Taguig City.

“What we want and need really is an inside presence," Perasol said. “If we can’t get that type of player in the draft, we’ll just use the pick as trade bait."

After gaining experience in the PBA’s biggest stage, the Express will certainly be touted as a tournament favorite when the Philippine Cup kicks off on October 4.

Air21 lost a Fiesta Conference it came so close to winning after the Express went up 3-2 in the championship series.

But the Express’ inexperience unraveled in the succeeding games, losing a 16-point lead in Game Six and allowing Ginebra to orchestrate a 14-0 run in the last four minutes in Game Seven. – GMANews.TV
