AH, INDEPENDENCE DAY--it’s a great, magical day when we all remember how much we love holidays. There’s no school, the streets are empty, and for some reason the weather’s perfect.
So nothing’s to stop you from seeing Super filmmaker Raya Martin’s "Maicling pelicula nañg ysañg indio nacional (O Ang Mahabang Kalungkutan ng Katagalugan)." Or, don’t let the title stop you.
The film was written and directed by Raya; and you can expect damn solid performances from a cast led by Bodjie Pascua.
It is set in the 1890s, in the midst of a brewing Filipino revolution. It follows the awkward life of an Indio--who, as a child, is a church bell-ringer torn between his duties to the Spanish state and his people; in his teens, is caught in the pressures of the revolution; and, in his later years, is an actor in a rural community escaping his troubled soul.
It is a silent film. Yeah, that idea’s foreign to a many Filipinos but many of us should realize the lack of dialogue does not take away from a film. The beauty of this movie is that it tells the Filipino experience with the universal languages of emotion, terrific imagery and moving music. These are three things that are deep in Filipino culture, and they seem to touch foreign audiences as well.
"Indio Nacional" has been selected for this year’s Rotterdam International Film Festival, the 30th Hong Kong International Film Festival, 49th San Francisco International Film Festival, and the 17th Festival International du Documentaire de Marseille. It has closed the 3rd Isola Cinema Film Festival, as well.
Variety Magazine says, the film is "fascinating," and that it "confirms Martin’s place as a talent to watch." Gertjan Zuillhof of the International Film Festival Rotterdam says Raya, "reinvents silent film." Roger Garcia of the San Francisco International Film Festival says the movie is, "one of the truly original works of contemporary Filipino cinema."
Woah. Double woah.
There isn’t a better way to spend June the 12th. Super’ll see you at the movie!
The Philippine Premiere of Raya Martin’s "Maicling pelicula nañg ysañg indio nacional (O Ang Mahabang Kalungkutan ng Katagalugan)" is on June 12, 2006, 7:30 p.m. at Shangri-La Plaza. GOOD news for young filmmakers. ABC 5 is considering giving grants to directors of documentaries or short films through its weekly TV program “Dokyu: Ang Bagong Mata ng Pinoy Documentaries.”
According to Dodge M. Dillague, creative director for “Dokyu,” the show is pushing through with its plan to fund documentaries as soon as it receives the go signal from network bosses.
“This is the next level for ‘Dokyu,’” Dillague told Inquirer Entertainment during a visit to the ABC 5 offices in Novaliches, Quezon City. “We’ve aired more than 50 documentaries, mostly of students, amateurs and professionals. While we show an average of only two documentaries per episode, the show gets almost a hundred entries a week.”
“Dokyu,” now on its fifth season, was designed to be a venue for students and first-time filmmakers to showcase their work. Starting July 27, the program will also air short films.
Dillague said a six-member committee was formed to choose the best documentaries for TV in terms of quality, technical ability and story. The committee is comprised of the show’s executive producer, the head writer, director, creative director and the network’s chief of news and public affairs.
Dillague showed Inquirer Entertainment its news and public affairs (N&PA) office where hundreds of entries—in VCD, DVD and Betamax formats—were stored.
“These are from provinces such as Bicol, Cebu, Bacolod, Davao and Baguio,” he said. “We received one from New York City. But we’re still on the lookout for more interesting materials.”
What does it take for a piece to be aired on “Dokyu”?
“The general idea is, if it kept us riveted, then the material is good. If it is done by students, dapat malinis,” said Dillague. “Secondly, it has to answer questions like, ‘What’s it about? Why was it made?’”
He added: “If a docu is created by professionals, we assume that it’s ‘clean,’ so we look at the story line. Docus sometimes promote a group. We’re very cautious.”
Dillague said the program was also looking into the possibility of giving out awards for the best documentaries.
“Dokyu” airs from 10 to 11 p.m. on ABC 5.
