Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 | What we know and don’t know
What we know about MH17
-Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 carried 283 passengers (which includes 3 infants previously unaccounted for) of various nationalities and 15 crew members. There were no survivors.
-The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of the United Kingdom had issued a warning last June 30, 2014, for British aircrafts to avoid the space over Crimea, the Sea of Azov, and the Black Sea due to conflicting instructions from Russian and Ukrainian air traffic controllers and related ‘potential misidentification of civil aircraft’. Aside from these air spaces, however, there were no bans imposed over other areas of Ukraine in that June warning.
-The memo also included a warning for British airlines to ‘review current security/threat information’ when flying over the Dnepropetrovsk flight region, including Donetsk.
-Ukrainian authorities had also issued a ban, not allowing any aircraft to use the airspace of up to a height of 32,000 feet over the ground. The doomed civilian flight was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet when it was hit by the missile, according to a report by Dan Milmo who spoke with an official from the European air traffic control body.
-Although hand-held missile or rocket launchers could not hit aircraft flying at 33,000 feet (around 10,000 m) above the ground, sophisticated weaponry such as the Buk launcher reportedly used to shot down MH17, have ample power to hit such high-flying targets. The Buk launcher is supposed to have a range of up to 18,000 m.
-Flight plans by international flights are submitted for approval approximately every 6 months. Before the flight, MH17 was given clearance to follow its original route, including flying over the Dnepropetrovsk region.
-At any time during the flight, the route may still be changed, especially if there are security concerns. Malaysia Airlines confirms, however, that there were no distress calls from MH17. There were also no warnings from Ukrainian authorities regarding possible threats to the plane by flying over the supposedly safe airspace.
-Following the incident, all flights are now barred from flying over any airspace above eastern Ukraine.
-Locals and some separatist rebels have combined their efforts for tentative recovery efforts and to put out the blaze.
What we don’t know
-Who shot down the civilian plane, no one knows for certain yet.
-According to an update on The Guardian, however, Itar-Tass news agency reported in June that some Buk missiles were stolen from the Ukrainian military base when it was raided by the Donetsk People’s Republic.
-As of press time, no group has publicly claimed responsibility over the incident yet.
-Some of the locals claim that the plane had ‘exploded in mid-air’ while others said they heard some shots before seeing the plane come crashing down.
-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko believes the incident involved terrorist groups.
-Russia and Ukraine are trading barbs, but no one knows for certain who is telling the truth. Ukraine alleges Russian involvement while Russian president Vladimir Putin said, “bears responsibility for the tragedy”.
-A photo is also circulating on social media of a photo of the ill-fated MH17, allegedly taken by Dutch passenger [Ernst-Jan Pfauth (@ejpfauth)] before boarding the plane. It was captioned with “Mocht hij verdwijnen , zo ziet hij d’r uit” which, supposedly, translates to “In case it goes missing, here is what it looks like”. The Twitter post was taken down for unknown reasons, but the alleged photo was posted on Facebook by a certain Cor Pan. The origin and caption of the photo are not yet confirmed to come from a real passenger of MH17.so
