The violence was toned down because its a PG 13 movie. It's not a rip-off. The idea of people killing each other for sport or kids killing each other is hardly a new concept. The Long Walk, The Running Man, Lord of the Flies, The Most Dangerous Game...Hell, I even thought of people making kids kill each other when I was in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
I love watching people argue about how this is a rip-off of that and in the same breath admit they've never seen/read one of the things they are comparing. I learned in screen writing classes that there really is no such thing as an original idea. Battle Royale isn't original. The Hunger Games isn't either. I'm pretty sure the Romans did it first and it might not have been original then. What makes a film or book or television show good is how they take those ideas and interpret them.
Another thing they teach in screen writing classes, is to re-imagine a good story in a different era, place, or different characters (if you don't have an original idea). This does work really well and has brought out better movies than the original idea. People have thought of ideas that, months or years later, come out in a movie by someone else. It's inevitable. It's the nature of the beast as a writer or film maker. I think it's really unfair for people to get too upset about people "ripping off others" in most cases, it's just coincidence.
I guess it's silly to be all indignant about The Hunger Games "ripping-off" Battle Royale. I guess whenever you really like something on a quiet level, you feel it's yours and that maybe it was the first. Guess it's human nature to do that a bit...or just a human's sense of ownership.
I loved the compare and contrast discussions I've had with friends but if someone call out rip-off I think it just becomes a bit unfair.
