First, he spurned UC - the school that was supposed to have 'discovered' him - after UV gave him a better offer. Then, he gives UV a dose of their own medicine by moving to Ateneo, reasoning that he wanted to be based in Manila because of his commitment to the Gilas team. Truth is, while he does practice with Gilas, they haven't been able to avail of his services as of late ever since the school year started, so what's the difference with him staying and finishing his studies in UV? You might say 'crab mentality' or whatever, but loyalty is an important virtue in my book, and I'm really disappointed with what I've seen with Slaughter. I understand that an Ateneo education and experience is an opportunity not afforded to everyone and that Slaughter is just looking out for his future outside basketball, but still, you shouldn't turn your back on those who were with you when the spotlight wasn't centered on you yet. Not too long ago, when Slaughter still sucked serious balls, when UV played Ateneo in the PCCL 2007 Finals, remember the harsh comments thrown his way by the Ateneo people in online forums, YouTube, etc? They were saying he was worse than EJ Feihl, 'bano', 'walang kwenta', etc. And now that he's somewhat raised his game and developed, they're now bragging to the other schools that they'll be a force next year when Slaughter suits up? That's just pathetic. UV had to 'suffer' through the growing pains of Slaughter, and now that he's become a legit force, they won't be able to see the fruits of their labor? It would've been a better script had Slaughter stayed, and they finally get over the PCCL hump and win it all. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not a UV student. I'm just a basketball fan, and I want to see a Cebu team rise up and beat the bigger-city UAAP/NCAA teams for once.)
But, since he's already in Ateneo and is supposedly suiting up for them next year, it will be interesting to see how he matches up with the 6'10" Cameroonian/Nigerian import of FEU who will be suiting up also next year. I saw him play in some scrimmages and he's definitely more naturally athletic than Slaughter was when he first started out. Even with Slaughter's Gilas training, I can still see the FEU import holding his own. The Gilas training isn't quite everything it seems. JR Cawaling and Magi Sison are still not quite living up to their potential notwithstanding their stints on that team.
