Allan Houston could be the Knicks next GM

One of the strangest things about getting older as an NBA fan is seeing what the guys you watched as a kid end up doing with their lives after they're done playing. For instance, as a young Chicago Bulls fan who wore a Subway horn helmet during games, I'd have never thought that Michael Jordan — six-time NBA champion, five-time MVP, GQ cover model — would end up owning a basketball team and living in an outfit of leather blazers and terrible jeans. It's just weird to see these guys doing anything but being great at basketball.

That's why the New York Knicks' supposed front-runner for their not-yet-open general manager job is such a surprise. From ESPN's Ric Bucher:

Former New York Knicks shooting guard Allan Houston is the front-runner to be the team's next general manager under team president Donnie Walsh, according to league sources.

Walsh would neither confirm nor deny Houston's status. "He is working with me to learn the position of GM, whether with the Knicks or elsewhere," Walsh said. "I feel Allan has the tools to be a great GM."

Yep, it's the Allan Houston you're thinking of — No. 20, perpetual 5 o'clock shadow, rule named after him that helps teams with terrible contracts on their roster. Same guy. Weird, right? Especially weird when you consider Houston was trying to play for the Knicks just two seasons ago.

But hey, if the Knicks think Allan Houston is ready to become a general manager, then who are we to argue? They have a pristine track record with these sort of things, so they should know best. Furthermore, Houston wouldn't even be the youngest GM in the league. If it works out that he takes the Knicks' reigns, then good for him. We can only hope that he'll institute a rule that all New York players have to wear a jersey eight sizes too big, just like he did back in the day.

The Knicks will open the 2010-11 season the way they ended the 2009-10 season; with a game in Toronto.

A team source tells The Daily News that the Knicks will face the Raptors on Oct. 27 and will play their home opener three days later against Portland.

The preliminary schedule also has the Knicks hosting Chicago on Christmas Day. As for the big game - Miami - LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh make their Garden debut on Dec. 17 and return Jan. 27.
