Pistons add Mohammed to try to fill Wallace's void
    ESPN.com news services

Free agent center Nazr Mohammed of the Spurs has agreed to a five-year, $30 million deal with the Detroit Pistons, ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher is reporting.

Terms were unavailable. Mohammed replaces Ben Wallace, who told the team Monday that he was leaving to join the Chicago Bulls.

Wallace, who agreed to a four-year, $60 million deal with Chicago, helped Detroit advance to four straight conference finals -- the first team to do so since the Bulls of the early 1990s.

Mohammed started 30 games last season for the Spurs, averaging 6.2 points and 5.2 rebounds. The 6-foot-10, 250-pound center most likely will replace Wallace in the starting lineup, allowing Rasheed Wallace to remain a power forward.

Mohammed, who turns 29 on Sept. 5, probably will not be able to rebound, block shots and provide energy as Ben Wallace did -- but he will cost about $9 million less next season.

with big ben leaving pistons, cleveland will be one of east's tough team not exactly, on the contrary, the East will be more competitive because of this new developments. the draft, trades, and big name acquisitions would only make the Eastern conference more exciting. it's too early for predictions on who's gonna be the front runner in this conference, the trade deadline is still too far away, a lot of things can still happen.

Its too early to predict but Miami remains as favorite for some obvious reasons :
    1. Theyre under the cap ( Zo ang payton are 1M players)
    2. Almost all players returning..
    3. If you really really want a ring, Shaq is the most logical ally ( just ask the Glove, mailman, Zo)

Pistons will remain as contender but one obvious change was the shifting of defensive focus to offense.
As Ben points out "the difference between LB and Flip is like night and day"
During Larry Brown's term, Big was given offensive sets as a reward to his defensive effort but with Flips case, he is letting Chauncey loose and keep calling Rip's "2 -chest" play ( The two wallaces will set screens to Rip in order to free himself).
This is almost the same play in Indiana years ago when Dale and Antonio Davis will set screens to free up Reggie Miller..
This irritates Ben so much because he is just an offensive accessory.
The result was an obvious increase in points but also a decline on Big Bens morale...

Ben will be 36 by the end of his contract..you have just witnessed the decline of Big mans' play when they get past 34.. Shaq, Antonio Davis, Ewing, Motumbo signed up the same length of contract at almost the same age.. but they get traded before it ended.. right now, the Bulls get excited but if it backfires, they will regret losing Chandler in the end... Chandler was supposed to be the Clipper's 2nd pick behind Kwame and they gave up Elton Brand for him. Now they might end up with PJ Brown, whos raring to go back to Louisiana when his contract expires and an overpaid rebounder who is a worse free throw shooter than Shaq..

Another thing is Chauncey and McDyess will try to opt out their contract in the end so adding Nazi will is just like replacing defense with more offense and free throw percentage..,but at 9M less per year...

Pistons Use Late Run to Rally Past Heat
    Posted Apr 1 2007 6:37PM

    Pistons 94, Heat 88

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 1 (AP) -- The Miami Heat knew that Richard Hamilton's return would help the Detroit Pistons' offense.

They weren't expecting him to boost Detroit's defense as well, leading the Pistons to a 94-88 victory over the Heat on Sunday.

"Rip Hamilton basically turned the game around with his pressure and his defense,'' Miami coach Pat Riley said. "That got them aggressive.''

Hamilton, who had missed four games with a concussion and the flu, scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half and limited Miami's Jason Williams to eight points after he had scored 13 in the first half.

"I've been watching Lindsey Hunter play defense all this time, and I'm learning from him,'' Hamilton said. "Jason Williams was getting whatever he wanted in the first half, and I wanted to take that away from him.''

Hamilton played 20 second-half minutes, hitting five of seven shots and going 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
