    Game today:
    The Arena
2 p.m. San Beda Red Cubs vs. NU Bullpups
    4 p.m. – San Beda vs. Ateneo

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters were not going back home empty-handed as they walloped the finals-bound San Sebastian Stags, 92-71, in their concluding semifinal game of the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.

The Webmasters were firing on all cylinders and were especially deadly from beyond the three-point arc with Edward Pao and Robinson Mohammad combining for 13 treys between them.

Pao had 25 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals and had seven trifectas.

Pao had back-to-back treys that anchored an 11-0 run that bridged the third and fourth periods that broke the game wide open in their favor.

Mohammad had six three-point bombs, with three coming in the final canto that helped the Webmasters lead by as many as 24, 87-63. All in all, the Webmasters made 16 three-pointers.

The win was the first for a Cebuano team since the University of the Visayas Green Lancers won over STI in the 2007 semifinals of the PCCL.

UC finished with a 1-2 (win-loss) record while San Sebastian ended the round with a 2-1 mark.

In spite of the loss, the Stags are assured of a seat in the finals and are armed with a twice-to-beat advantage.

The Stags will await the winner of the game today between San Beda and Ateneo de Manila.

PCCL: Ateneo survives horrendous shooting, nips San Sebastian to forge game two
    By Celest R. Flores
    INQUIRER.net
6:26 pm | Monday, December 12th, 2011 23share55 32MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion Ateneo bucked a horrendous shooting night to conquer San Sebastian, 56-51, and forged a winner-take-all finals match in the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Monday at the Arena in San Juan.

With only one field goal conversion in the entire payoff period, the Blue Eagles leaned on their steady free throw shooting and defense down the stretch to survive the Stags, who had a twice-to-beat edge.

Ateneo nailed eight of its 12 attempts from the stripe in the fourth period even as Kiefer Ravena, who punched in 10 points, connected on a tough turnaround jumper to regain the lead with 2:39 left.

“The game was not pretty but we’ll take it. We practiced bad yesterday [Sunday] and we played bad today [Monday]. We just outlasted them in the end,” an exhausted head coach Norman Black told the reporters after the game.

“Everybody contributed [to the 26 turnovers]” Black jested.

Ateneo also missed all but three of its 19 shots from beyond the arch.

Nico Salva was the only one who constantly lit up the scoreboard for Ateneo as he finished with a game-high 18 points, which went along with five rebounds.

Seven-foot center Greg Slaughter struggled offensively for the Blue Eagles but still pulled down 14 rebounds.

The Blue Eagles seemed to have gotten their groove in the second half where they opened up a nine-point gash, 46-37, before the end of the third quarter.

But San Sebastian, which rallied behind its best player Calvin Abueva, easily erased the deficit on an eight-to-nothing swing.

Abueva, who fouled out with still more than a minute left to play and a game on the line, still finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds – albeit with 10 turnovers – despite being a marked man.

“I don’t think you can really stop Calvin Abueva,” said Black. “We put a bigger guard on him [this game.”

Ateneo, which has never missed the finals of the PCCL in the last five years, and San Sebastian, which dominated in the final four, square off for the decider on Thursday, 3 p.m., at the same venue.

Blue Eagles thwart Stags, force final PCCL duel
    By Jasmine W. Payo
    Philippine Daily Inquirer
9:13 pm | Monday, December 12th, 2011 0share4 3MANILA, Philippines—Nico Salva provided the end-game lift Ateneo needed as the Blue Eagles survived a sloppy outing to down the San Sebastian Stags, 56-51, Monday and forge a winner-take-all showdown for the Philippine Collegiate Champions League crown at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Salva unloaded the last four of his game-high 18 points in the final three minutes to push the Eagles back on top after blowing an eight-point lead, 42-34, in the third quarter.

“The game was not very pretty,” said Ateneo coach Norman Black as the four-time UAAP champions uncharacteristically committed 26 turnovers.

“But as a coach you take it any way you can get it. At least it puts us in a position to win the championship again.”

The Eagles, who ruled the nationwide tournament in three of the last four years, try to go all the way against the Stags at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The Stags are also bidding to become the first NCAA team to cop the title. They made it to the finals with a twice-to-beat advantage after nipping the Eagles in the semifinals.

Earlier, San Beda downed University of Cebu, 82-69, to clinch third place and the P100,000 cash prize and another P100,00 worth of athletic goods for the school.

Rome dela Rosa drilled in 21 points built on a notable 9-of-14 clip from the field and grabbed seven rebounds for the NCAA champion Red Lions.

The Webmasters, who also picked up a P50,000 prize, trailed most of the way even with the 6-foot-10 Junemar Fajardo getting away with 24 points, 24 rebounds, three assists and a couple of blocks.

Salva knocked in 10 points in a third-quarter run that gave the Eagles their biggest lead at 42-34 after a tight first half that saw neither team leading by more than three points.

“He really produced for us offensively on a day when everybody struggled,” said Black. “Nico has been one of our most consistent players this year. He usually plays at a high-post position against the zone defense and he got a lot of his points in that area today.”

Calvin Abueva, San Sebastian’s fiery forward, put the Stags ahead for the last time at 50-48 late in the fourth quarter before fouling out with still a minute to go and the Eagles just up by three, 54-51.

Abueva wound up with a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards for the Stags, who again missed the clutch-shooting Ronald Pascual due to injury.

“I guess we just outlasted them,” said Black.

    The scores:

para nako sayop gihapon ila decision to pull Mark Jayben Tallo out of the Loyola powerhouse Ateneo... now look at.... he wasted one year of his basketball life learning what? Training kuno to improve for what? He may become the star of DLSU but he will not shine as brightly had he suited up for the Magis Eagles... este the Arneo Eagles di ay. ka usik jud bata-a. mag-yaya lang silang duhang Tampus sa Taft campus.

DLSU will be competitive BUT not championship material... The ATENEO system is a better oiled machine. BLUE EAGLES' domination of UAAP may last the next 3 to 5 years. Example: Greg is there until he is 25 or for the next 2 more seasons. Kiefer will be there at least until he is 22 or the next 4 seasons.
