PBA tackles pros stint in RP five
    By Nelson Beltran
    Monday, June 23, 2008
PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios and SBP executive director Noli Eala will sit down in a meeting in the next few days to discuss international tournaments for national teams reinforced by pro players.

The PBA wants the issue resolved as soon as possible since the pro league is now drawing its calendar of activities for next season set to start in October.

Barrios is expected to present to the PBA board at least two formats of tournaments in their regular monthly board meeting Tuesday in the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City.

The league postponed its scheduled games at the Araneta Coliseum last night due to bad weather resulting in flooded areas and non-operation of the MRT and LRT trains.

In the forthcoming meeting, Barrios will advise the board that they have formalized their memorandum of agreement with Solar Sports regarding the league’s exclusive broadcast rights.

The Commissioner’s Office and Solar Sports top officials have had at least five meetings in preparation for Solar Sports’ takeover of the PBA TV coverage at the end of the ongoing season.

Barrios is keen on re-adopting a three-conference format for the PBA starting next season. However, the PBA chief said they might not be able to implement it if the SBP requests pro players for international competitions next year.

Among the big events in the FIBA calendar next year is the regional qualifier for the 2010 World Basketball Championship in Turkey. Under the old SBP agreement, this competition falls under the jurisdiction of the pro league.

“I’ve conceptualized the three-conference format. Something that need to be discussed is whether there’s an international engagement that will require absence of our players in our league,” said Barrios.

Apparently, most of the PBA governors, including incoming board chairman Joaqui Trillo, are also for the league’s return to the old format.

The league shifted to a fiscal calendar using a two-conference format starting in 2004 under then commissioner Eala.
