Anyway the point I'm making is this... don't be surprised if China engineers a scenario where they deploy forces and then grab the contested areas. I believe they already tried this against Japan when a Chinese fishing vessel rammed a Japanese coast guard patrol. The Japanese didn't take the bait, but somebody surely will.
Russia counter-attack to flush out the US-trained Georgian troops in South Ossetia.

I don't think China will use force in Spratlys, or else the US will make it as an excuse to return in the area.

As much as possible the US wants to encircle China & Russia with foreign bases.

^South Ossetia was at that time part of Georgia. One could argue that Russia was allowing the rebels free access across the border so that they could constantly escape and rearm.

China will in my opinion use force over the Spratleys and other areas in this region. However I think they will have their own unique version of events. They have demonstrated little interest in what the rest of the world thinks about them while carefully feeding their own population half truths and propaganda. They even seem to have been nurturing nationalist sentiment at home with protests against Japan, South Korea and even Philippines happening on the streets. This is very odd when any other type of demonstration is quickly squashed by the authorities.

The situation is different. South Ossetia was a defacto-independent state since 1990. Georgia took the bait and was defeated.

The situation in Spratlys is different. If China will take the bait and engage with our force, Uncle Sam will use the excuse of "freedom of navigation" to come back in the area which we kicked them out in the 90s.

China doesnt want the Yankees to give more control in the area as they are surrounded already.

I would imagine China will be the one offering the bait. They build a base, wait for Philippine vessels to venture too close, open fire and then declare an exclusion zone which will be periodically expanded for "security reasons". Twenty years later Filipino history students will be scratching their heads wondering how we lost so much territory.

I don't think we will ever be ready for China.

While we were getting mad it looks as though Japan was busy getting even.

BBC News - Japan finds rare earths in Pacific seabed

(For those who don't already know) Rare Earths are valuable minerals essential for the manufacturing of electronic components. As the name suggests they are not abundant and China currently controls 97% of the world's supply of this precious material.

That is possible also, just like how Vietnam lost its territories (Spratlys) to China (70s & 80s). But during that time China is not an emerging power. Fast forward today, The US goal is to surround China with military base. And China doesnt want it to happen, if they would do that it will give the US an excuse to return and set up a base in the area.
