MANILA, Philippines — Hours after a somber Vice President Jejomar Binay said that only a miracle could save three Filipinos facing execution for drug trafficking in China, Beijing turned around and announced it was allowing him to make a plea for clemency in the Chinese capital.
Binay’s office said late Thursday night that China had announced that he would meet with the Chief Justice of the Supreme People’s Court in Beijing. The Vice President is to leave at 7:15 a.m. Friday, his office said.
    Malacaņang welcomed the development.
“A door which was otherwise closed has just opened and we remain steadfast in our hope that the trip of Vice President Binay will further our appeal for leniency to the Chinese government,” Palace deputy spokesperson Abigail Valte told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo said in a statement that in announcing to the Philippine Embassy in Beijing that China had agreed to receive Binay, the Chinese government “took into serious consideration the sentiments” of President Benigno Aquino III and the Filipino people.
“The visit aims to reaffirm the close friendship between the Philippines and China and manifest the common resolve of both countries to address the drug menace,” Romulo said.
In a news conference earlier Thursday, Binay had said that China had rejected Mr. Aquino’s request to send him to Beijing to seek commutation of the death sentence to life imprisonment.
“The Chinese government said that the time is not appropriate for me to go to China,” Binay had told reporters minutes after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) relayed Beijing’s rejection of his request.

I think it's a waste of time and money. They are going to be executed for sure. This is something I'm 100% sure of. China is just letting Binay go because the president kept pressing the issue, but they should have stopped asking the first time the offer was declined.
