FIL-FOREIGN DRAFT APPLICANTS, WHO ARE THEY?
    The Score by Patricia Bermudez-Hizon
    Special to Yahoo! Southeast Asia

For the upcoming draft on August 29, there are a number of Filipino-foreign hopefuls trying their luck to get into the PBA. Most of them haven’t had any experience playing here, while some played in the amateurs for a short period of time. They all got game but not too many may know about it.

Take for example Filipino-American John Albert Smith who hails from the Bay Area but went to the University of Hawaii Hi-Lo and was three years Alex Cabagnot’s junior. His athleticism and smarts have gotten him an opportunity to play as an import in the German Pro-B League playing for the SSV-Lok Bernau squad where he averaged 17 ppg and 5apg. His mother, Prima Salvador is from Dinalupihan, Bataan but this is his first time in the Philippines. He logged in as one of the fastest in the sprint test.

Watch out for Uriel Marc Gapilan. He’s Manny Pacquiao’s friend and has been playing basketball with the People’s Champ-turned-congressman for the past four fights already. But more than having friends in high places, he’s got the willingness and determination to showcase in the draft camp. His family’s from Naga, he was born in Manila, but he grew up in California and went to Walla Walla University in the East. This starting point guard has led the school to a third place finish, the farthest the school has gone in the NAIA.

From the Stevens Institute of Technology, Chris Gavina is also trying his luck in the rookie camp. This 27-year-old, 5’11 point guard grew up in New Jersey where was phenomenal in his school: he had his number retired and they inducted him in the school’s hall of fame. He played in Liga for two years for Quezon and Mandaue, but he’s hoping he’ll get noticed in the rookie camp.

The only Fil-Canadian in the batch, Sean Anthony, is from Vancouver but went to McGill University in Montreal where he played for five years. This shooting guard, small forward was an MVP two years ago, was the all-conference defensive player and has got real athletic abilities which he showcased in a short stint in the Tournament of the Philippines. In his lone game, he scored 13 points, four rebounds and two assists, but he suffered a broken nose from a teammate in Ascof which is why he’s been playing in the scrimmages with a face guard.

Tracing his roots from Cebu, of the Pila clan, Shawn Weinstein is hoping he can showcase his brand of play in the PBA too. Originally from Los Angeles, Weinstein went to the San Diego State University then moved to the St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas where he was the starting PG for three years. This 25-year-old played professionally in the Israel Premier League playing for the Maccabi Netanya team for two years before deciding to come here and try his luck. He’s got high basketball IQ, obviously because of his age and his experience, and he’s very hardworking. He flew in two days before the draft camp.

Another Fil-American Allan Husted from Los Angeles went to a division 2 school, UC San Diego where he learned lot playing with and against talented players. He came to the Philippines before his senior year and played in Liga for the Pampanga team. He went back after a conference to finish his double major, Biology and Psychology. His mom Ruth Alfaro is from Lucena.

College basketball fans are already familiar with Hyram Bagatsing. He’s part of this list because he’s actually considered a Fil-Am even though he played in De La Salle University. He was born in San Francisco. His family returned to the Philippines when he was 4 years old, but moved back to the States when he was in high school. He’s a great shooting guard, but in college, he was able to develop point guard skills, which gives the 6’1” player versatility.

He’s already got a year’s worth of exposure to the Filipino brand of play, and has also played for the Laguna team in the PBL-Liga league. So Elijah Swan has already adjusted to the style here so he’s confident he’ll make a dent in the draft. This Fil-Am’s mother, Erlinda Collainares is from Olongapo.

One of the exciting prospects this year is Josh Vanlandingham who made his mark in the PBL last year playing for Happee. His sweet shooting from beyond the arc is one of the great facets of his game, but throw in quickness of defense and strength as well. He is the grandson Teofilo Yldefonso who is considered a Filipino swimming legend, having won bronze medals in the 1928 and 1932 Olympic games.

Rafil-Aval Mehyar was born in Sweden of a Filipina mother from Bulacan and a half-Filipino, half-Iranian father who studied in Manila. Mehyar played in the best Pro League in Sweden before playing more than two years in Norway as a pro. He’s got great shooting abilities, averaging a little over 40 percent from beyond the arc and is an 80 percent free throw shooter. He can also handle the ball real well showing his versatility. A highlight in his career was helping the Swedish D1 team in the Scandinavian league and scoring 46 points.

Mark Jeffries, who can jump out of the gym, played for San Diego Mesa College for two years where he won a slam dunk contest before moving to Iowa to play for Penn University as a shooting guard, small forward. He’s quick on his feet. His mother is Lucia Aguilar from Catbalogan, Samar. He just turned 23 last July.

He could be one of the shortest applicants at 5’6.5” but Martin Travela is ready to show that he can play harder than anyone. Born in the Philippines but raised in Reno, Nevada, Travela had the opportunity to play for a community college in California where he got numerous awards and learned to be a true leader. He tried to play here in 2005, but before his season with Granny Goose in the PBL even started, he had to return to the US. But now he’s back and he’s hoping to make up for lost time.

Chris Canta, another Fil-Am, is hoping to be one of the chosen ones. He’s from San Francisco but played in a community college in Sacramento where he was deadly from beyond the arc with a lethal 40 percent outside shooting clip. He was drafted by Happee a few years ago but got homesick and went back to the U.S. Now he’s taking this trip a lot more seriously and is hoping that his athleticism, and his shooting would be his key to getting drafted.
