Well currently most of the world is saying Israel is taking a too drastic measure.. "Disproportioante"... Well except the U.S. even the british says so. This problem goes way back, from the establishment of Isarel in 1948 as a home for jews. Ever since its establishment, there has been years of fighting between jews and its arab neighbors. Arabs believe that Israel is taking its land, even now they refer to it as "occupied palestine".

In my opinion, what israel is doing is worsening the situation, and increasing hatred towards it. And like it or not US, is pulled into the picture as it is Israels major ally since the beginning. This in turn, increases hatred over it. If this problem is to be solved they should look into the root of the problem, and I don't mean the root Mr. Bush is referring to in his recent speech.

If not then, the world is headed for $100/barrel of oil...

    just my 10 cents worth

Here's a nice column taken out of Sun-Sta, its funny but he has a point:

    Malilong: Protecting overseas Filipino workers
    By Frank Malilong
    The Other Side

The United States dispatched luxury ships to evacuate its nationals from war-threatened Lebanon. Great Britain sent warships. We couldn’t even hire a pump boat.

This is how we treat our modern day heroes. This is how we show our gratitude to the people whose remittances have kept the economy afloat despite the mismanagement by and incompetence of our national leaders.

The war in Lebanon did not erupt overnight. It is not as if the whole world woke up to see Israeli and Hezbollah forces engage in a fierce firefight. We knew there were thousands of overseas Filipino workers in Lebanon. Why didn’t we have a contingency plan?

Oh, yes we have. I read in the papers that we begged other countries to let our countrymen hitch a ride on their vessels. Gubat na, namukong lang gihapon.

Obviously, our begging has not gotten us far. The latest news is that while other nationals left in the comfort and relative safety of their rescue ships, our compatriots had to travel by bus to cross the border to Syria through a route that is fraught with danger because of the Israeli jets that regularly fly overhead.

Can you imagine if even one Israeli pilot mistook the convoy of Filipino-laden buses for a phalanx of Lebanese armor? Fortunately, none of that unfortunate incident has so far happened. God is merciful.

I have not forgotten that we are a poor country. No, make that very poor country. But having tolerated, if not encouraged, our people to abandon their families in order to look for jobs that our government cannot provide at home, couldn’t we have at least provided for their safe return under any circumstance?

The citizens of this country have a right to expect protection from their government wherever they may be. The Lebanon experience tends to tell us that the protection is more fiction than fact.

This is not to denigrate the efforts of some officials who have risked their own lives to conduct our countrymen to safety. They deserve our thanks. But we cannot forever rely on individual acts of heroism to ensure the safety and well being of our compatriots. We need a more rational and coordinated effort by our government.

We don’t have the money? But as Fr. Agustin Advincula, the Roman Catholic priest who has become the voice of Filipinos in Lebanon, asked, where have the billions of pesos in OFW remittances gone?

Please tell me that the money was not used to buy fertilizer for the farms in Makati.

Israel Says It Would Accept NATO-Led Force
By SAM F. GHATTAS, Associated Press Writers

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israeli warplanes struck a minibus carrying people fleeing the fighting Sunday in southern Lebanon, killing three people, Lebanese security officials said, and Israel said it would accept a NATO-led international force to keep the peace along the border.

Hezbollah rockets killed two civilians in northern Israel, and a member of the U.N. observer team in south Lebanon was wounded by guerrilla fire. A Lebanese photographer became the first journalist to die in the fighting when an Israeli missile hit near her taxi in southern Lebanon.

The top U.N. humanitarian official, touring Beirut, said billions of dollars will be needed to repair damage from 12 days of warfare.

Israeli troops continued to hold a Lebanese border village that they battled their way into the day before, but did not appear to be advancing, Lebanese security officials said. Its warplanes and artillery, meanwhile, were battering areas across the south.

Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz told the Cabinet that the current offensive is not an invasion of Lebanon, but rather a series of limited raids into the area.

Yeah, Israel will accept the NATO-Led Force after a cease-fire, but Israel will accept a cease-fire after eliminating Hizbollah and get the 2 abducted soldiers. 2 to 3 more weeks of Israel offensive will be expected.

Rice has said she won't be pursuing a cease-fire at the moment. Speaking at the State Department last week, she said Hezbollah is the source of the problem in Lebanon and a cease-fire "will be a false promise if it returns us to the status quo."(cnn.com)
