I think the problem is that the masses, most notably those below the poverty line, are demoralized. The problem runs so deep that every Filipino's mindset is stuck at "getting ahead first" instead of "helping each other to get there." In other words, everyone's just looking out for his/her own ass.

This mentality is also what's prompting many of the Philippines' citizens to vote for leaders promising to end their poverty - which is pretty sick, since any leader with the right intentions would be smart enough not to make such a big promise.

Can one leader solve it all? I highly doubt it. The poverty cycle usually takes around 2 generations to break, so real change will probably only happen in the next 50 years or so. Magsaysay was on the right track, but it only takes a few idiots to ruin the great work of hundreds. Those in power will always be tainted with corruption, but when a whole country's citizens are infected with it like a cancer, therein lies the real problem.

big difference in elections before and today : niadto ok ra pakan-on mga tawo, karon mangyam-id ug P100 ray imong ihatag ...

kadto mo-aspire for high office before, say senate, pulos orador. diokno, salonga, tanada and the likes. they were educated, they had wisdom, they had integrity, they spoke well. they read a lot, they like music (manglapus even plays in a jazz band) and yes, they were elitist.

karon lahi na man. a candidate must sing, dance, inom tuba. which is kinda dumb (which they probably are, btw). i enjoy drinking beer with my own barkada, but i certainly don't want any of them becoming president. yet, majority sa electorate ana man ang thinking.

gwen soco knows that : hence her gimmick "catch me if you can two years ago" when she dangled thousands of pesos of prizes to anyone who submits a photograph of her, her suroy-suroy sa sugbo, dancing in the sinulog, pa kodak while astride a horse and similar sorry spectacles.

pero ana man gud tingali ang gipangaita sa botante

Yes, you're correct about the quality of politicians then and now. Back then we had true statesmen. Nowadays, we only have, well, politicians.

Unfortunately, brilliance and oratory skills have become minuses. After all, Marcos had good oratory skills and was a brilliant man, but where did that get us? And to take the reasoning to its logical conclusion, Mas maayo pa mubutar ug bogo.

    Sigh.

However, our nostalgia for the two-party system is somewhat overblown. Even in the 40's and 50's, ideology played as much part in differentiating the Nacionalistas from the Liberals as it does now. Which is to say there wasn't any difference at all. It was just as much about individuals then as it is today. No less than Ramon Magsaysay himself crossed over from the Liberal Party to the Nacionalistas. Ferdinand Marcos, elected under the Nacionalista banner, was himself an LP transferee.

Corruption-wise there was nothing to choose between either party. The corrupt Quirino government was Liberal. And while Magsaysay's golden reign was under the Nacionalista banner, his successor Carlos P. Garcia's term was likewise marked by corruption. And let's not forget Marcos, who rules the roost.

Don't expect party ideology to drive Philippine politics for at least a generation. Why? Simple. Ideology and platforms are just too vague for most voters. For as long as 90% of our voting population is composed of Class D and E, party ideology takes a back seat to personality-driven politics, while empty promises and pandering to the poor rule over solid, implementable platforms.
Good Points, Interesting reads from comments given .. We all have different thoughts on negatives in the system today and the system never changing at all from past to present, the problem could be 2 fold , 3 fold ... Problems range from Culture, how we think, work, live, outlook of this country ( people are just giving up because it is the norm na ) attitudes of if u can't win might as well join them. See the interesting thing is most of the times I hear people talking about the problem of this country as opposed to what we do about fixing it. While there are no clear immediate solutions I think ultimately it falls on a good leader and the people making sacrifices. A leader that has character, true nationalism, true intention to lead this country out of this stench, visionary, one that will break the norms of the past, one that will not waiver from implementing the law, one that will force people to follow the law, (I know some might say that may be too much ) but hey maybe thats what we need now, will all these killing, corruption, so on.... Heck I even had a friend mention if our traffic rules were mere suggestions, should I make a left on a NO left turn, mmmmm okay ill make that left. Thats how lax we are...

You know , I've mentioned this to a lot of people, friends... Why are Filipinos good Citizens abroad, Why do we work hard, Why do we follow rules abroad, we flourish...

The reason is we know we are all equal, the rules apply to everyone, the law is implemented, and we get whats due if we work hard at it.

Unless someone steps up both on a Political end , and the people sacrificing to make this country better , nothing will happen.

Unfortunately I don't see that in any Candidate today ( I do hope i'm wrong ), so once again we make do and let the cycle turn once more ...

Folks we are better than this !!

I often ponder of having a Lee Kuan Yew in the Phils - I don't really need to mention his achievements but one thing I must mention is his strict implementation of the law.

    Food for thought all

Keen observation on lyrics , pretty neat
Although what if prices in the past were reasonable , we all know certain points are relative - past , present - although one word "inflation" - what are govt's of today doing to protect its people from rising inflation. On politicians being noble well I would have to say there is a good debate there but sure they had corruption then but u are right they are getting greedier today, On children respecting elders I say absolutely.
