Chinese Catholics ask prayers to withstand pressure

May. 08 (AsiaNews) - The bishops of China's "underground" Catholic Church are asking the faithful to unite in prayer
for priests of the government-approved "official" Church, that they might have the strength to resist pressure to
break off their loyalty to the Holy See.
The AsiaNews service, which reported the request for prayers from the underground bishops, has inaugurated a
worldwide campaign, asking all Catholics to join in the effort.
The prayerful support of underground Catholics is deliberately in contrast with the threats and intimidation that the
Catholic Patriotic Association has used to rally support from clerics of the "official" Church.
In a May 4 statement protesting the illicit ordinations of bishops in Kunming and Wuhu, the Vatican took note of the
"strong pressure and threats" that were used to persuade Chinese bishops and priests to participate in the ceremonies.
The high-stakes battle for control of the Catholic Church in China was again illustrated vividly on May 7, when Father
Paul Pei Junmin was ordained as coadjutor bishop of the Shenyang diocese. While recognized by the government and
the "official" Church, the new bishop also has the approval of the Holy See-- unlike the two bishops ordained on April
30 and May 3.
The Catholic Patriotic Association has adamantly opposed the Vatican's claim to authority over the appointment of
bishops in China. The Patriotic Association pressed for the ordination of bishops without Vatican approval, and Liu
Bainian, the vice-president of the group, has said that he plans 20 more such ordinations of bishops in coming months.
One leader of the "official" Church told AsiaNews that his priests are being "subjected to enormous pressure" to accept
the leadership of the Patriotic Association. "In this moment it is necessary to pray for all priests of the official Church,"
an underground bishop told AsiaNews. "It is our duty."

In a petition relayed through AsiaNews, the underground Catholic Church in China has asked the faithful -- in that country
and around the world-- to pray of the Holy Spirit and Our Lady each day until Pentecost: "that bishops and priests be
given strength and courage in the face of persecution, pressure, and threats that seek to destroy the unity of Chinese
Catholics with the Pope."
