During the Jim Crow period of the United States, it was considered an offense against the society for blacks, mexicans and other minorities to step on white men's shadows, stare at white men for 3 seconds or more, take a look at a white woman, and behave freely in the presence of white folks.. Black entertainers had to pass through back doors of hotels, restaurants and casinos, put on a black face make up to pretend to be white folks being black (it was illegal for blacks to be on stage, so blacks must pretend to be whites pretending to be blacks)... whats cannabis got to do with this? people blamed marijuana for the insolence of blacks and minorities... this racist sentiment led to the yellow journalism of William Hearst and congressional testimony of Harry Anslinger.... they even blamed JAZZ as the song of satan, because black cannabis musicians often played JAZZ music (which was new at that time). white folks accused cannabis and jazz music causing white women to dance like black people and have intercourse with black men... that was the origin of the cannabis prohibition, based on racist sentiments.
in South Africa's past, the white folks also blamed Dagga (cannabis) for the insolence of blacks and other minorities. they dislike the idea minorities enjoying themselves during their free time. however in the numerous South African mines, blacks were encouraged to use Dagga, because it makes them tolerant of the inhuman conditions they were subjected to.
