    Gov't buying modern fighter jets for training, disaster response

    MANILA, Jan. 30 (PNA) -- The Philippines is buying 12 fighter jets from South Korea primarily for training, interdiction, disaster response, Malacanang said Wednesday.

    The Dept. of Defense announced Wednesday the Philippines is purchasing combat aircraft from South Korea as part of its modernization program.

    “We are buying. I confirmed it with Secretary Voltaire Gazmin. They are primarily for training, interdiction, disaster response. These planes have camera capabilities to monitor and also take pictures of disaster areas. So it will be used in a number of ways,” Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda told a press conference in Malacanang.

    The new planes will be deployed whenever they are necessary, he added.

    “If there is a disaster, it will be deployed to monitor and see the extent of damage, for instance, in a disaster area. It will be deployed whenever there’s a need for the plane to be deployed,” he explained.

    The military hardware upgrade is already a priority even before the country’s latest incident with China, Lacierda said, noting the dispute wasn’t an issue when the government decided to upgrade its military hardware.

    The government is modernizing the country’s military air assets after the air force decommissioned its fighter jets, Lacierda said.

    “We don’t have any existing jets right now that are in use, therefore, it is necessary for us to upgrade based on our commitment to upgrade our military hardware and this is part of the ongoing process of modernizing our military,” he said.

    The Armed Forces Modernization Act has been a priority for the administration, he said, noting that the plan to buy new fighter aircraft is part of the modernization program. (PNA)

    which one bro the F/A-50 or the Gripen.. i'm not exactly sure how much ang Gripen. When it comes to pricing I don't want to post inaccurate info, I'll just leave it to the more "knowledgeable" posters here to provide you the price

    But from an article I've read recently, its the most viable MRF for our PAF since the cost to operate it is much lesser compared to other MRF out there such as the F-16, Rafale, Typhoon etc.

    Here's the link to the article.. it's kinda long but it's informative.

    Gripen operational cost lowest of all western fighters: Jane

    were getting the korean bird... which means we are moving towards F16... which the F/A-50 design and specs are based from F16... its is easier and cheaper that way... since the transfer of technology is easy... its like getting Cobra helicopter for AH than apache since cobra is based from UH-1... always consider the Cost of Operation sa aircraft and the Transfer of Technology...

    if we are getting a Grippen then it will be too expensive in the long run coz we will have to retrain the personel AGAIN... if F16... it will be just an update since F/A-50 is based from it... the KF-16 the korean licensed F16

    buying modern "fighter jets" for training? trainers for training, fighter jets for fighting... in that way less abuse for jets in which turns to savings from maintenance and more flight ours for those birds.

    the F/A-50 is basically tagged as a "light attack aircraft" as well as a LIFT. the reason why PAF upgraded from T/A-50 to F/A-50 is because of the features below;

    * Radar Warning Receiver
    * Countermeasures Dispenser System
    * Tactical LINK-16
    * Night vision
    * Can drop Joint Direct Attack Munition / Sensor Fuzed Weapon
    * Data recording system

    and besides our PAF knows what they want, this will bridged the gapped our pilots have from 2nd gen to 4th gen jets.
    an interview with Air Force spokesman Col Miguel Ernesto Okol posted by "theinsider" in timawa has shown us that PAF clearly view this as a step to train our pilots for real MRF soon. However, as of the moment no timeline yet of what MRF and when. it may go beyond Pnoy's term for all we know. Here's a link to that interview in timawa.net
